Thoughts on my ASTD TK07 Sessions - Social Bookmarking and Blogging

Tony Karrer

At ASTD TechKnowledge , I did three sessions around Blogging and Social Bookmarking. Many people were very concerned about issues of regulating the quality of content and security. My hope would be that the following might occur: Some attendees will try out reading/writing blogs, using an RSS reader (like bloglines), and/or use social bookmarking tools to support their personal learning. First - want to thank Jay Cross for taking pictures at various ASTD events.

One change I have made is to use Pinboard for my social bookmarks. I have collected a few social bookmarks on distributed work in the process. Pinboard — Social bookmarks are a quick way for me to save a web page and find it easily.

There is no hourly rate on internet time

Harold Jarche

I realized that I could complete the report in a few hours, by curating my own blog posts, social bookmarks , and other resources I had. I know that it is often the easiest route to just agree to an hourly rate when it comes to securing contracts. Let’s say you are a consultant and have just received a call to do some urgent work. Feel free to replace the term consultant with freelancer, programmer, designer, advisor, or anything else.

Tweet People are now the engine of change and the fuel is communications, says Jay Deragon in Systemic Impact of Social Technology. The simplest and easiest way is to replicate the tools and processes used on the open Internet – blogs, micro-blogs, social networks, social bookmarks, etc. Use a DIY approach and let the IT department focus on data security not tools.

Learning Organizations, eLearning 2.0 and Edupunk

Tony Karrer

The questions she raises are: Is the edupunk ideology saying that the use of social media in commercial learning management systems is an assault on the very philosophy of learning 2.0? Corporate IT is interested in rolling out systems that they can control for security, auditing, back-up and a host of other control reasons. For example, having social bookmarking that allows links to be kept private to a group. so that you can control visibility of bookmarks.

Models for Learning Questions

1) Two issues that come up, at least in the world of training in a government environment, is that of a) security of information, and b) control of the information given to the learner to make sure it is accurate. Security of the information is something that hopefully your IT organization is already dealing with. I recommend adopting their tools and their security mechanisms. As a side note, I think selling Twitter/Yammer is harder than selling social bookmarking and wikis.

eLearning 2.0 Random Thoughts based on Chat

Tony Karrer

Social Bookmarking and Wikis and Blogs are a form of social networking I never said this, but several people pointed it out in the chat. The same thing can be true with social bookmarking, wikis, flickr, etc. Using social bookmarking or meme tracking works okay. BTW, the term honey pot comes from a security term - it's a place you set up to attract people.

IBM I only briefly mentioned how other organizations are adopting these tools in a big way - The Wall Street Journal - June 18 2007 - social networking at IBM 26,000 registered blogs. Security - This is no worse than any other form of electronic communication.

Established vendors of collaboration software are modifying their offerings and repositioning them as social software platforms that have all the features and functions necessary to support the new modes of interacting and getting work done. An integrated and seamless ability to have some sense of security in the audience can increase the level of disclosure which in turn can foster a higher level of collaboration that can benefit the community writ large.
