innovating with pkm

Harold Jarche

I have extracted the 23 pages of Chapter 7 on personal knowledge mastery to provide an idea of what the remaining chapters in the book look like and as a reference for the online PKM workshop (the next workshop starts Monday 14 September). Download Chapter 7: PKM (PDF).

cynefin and pkm

Harold Jarche

I have taken the basic model I use to explain PKM, with teams in blue, communities in red, and networks in green, along two axes — high & low structure, and low & high abstraction. I am following up from thoughts on the cynefin framework and how it has informed my own work since 2009.

It is meant to complement the PKM Workshops and help practitioners. At 12 pages it is not designed to cover all aspects of the models, frameworks, and practices that inform PKM, but provide a quick reference, especially for those new to the discipline. Working Smarter with Personal Knowledge Mastery is a field guide for the networked knowledge worker.

PKM in practice

Harold Jarche

Cognitive load management is one of the four beneficial skills that can be acquired throughthe practice of personal knowledge mastery (PKM). While PKM is designed to lessen the cognitive load, learning how to develop this disciplined approach to sensemaking can actually increase the cognitive load. PKM Made Simple. PKM in Action Part 1. Why PKM?

Harold Jarche

Here is a short video introduction on why personal knowledge mastery ( PKM ) is becoming a required skill and mindset for professionals today. When you are only as good as your network, PKM becomes a necessity. I have noted that three types of insights that Klein observed through his 120 cases, can be developed through PKM – connections, coincidences and curiosity. My next onsite PKM workshop is at AITD in Sydney, Australia on 16 May 2014.

PKM Roles

Harold Jarche

This simple model has worked well in explaining the main concepts of PKM and helping others to individually construct a set of processes to make sense of the world and work more effectively. Over 10 years ago Patrick Lambe wrote a very good guide on the various roles one can have in PKM. – PKM: A DIY Guide to Knowledge Management. If you read the DIY guide, there are a series of questions to help identify your own tendencies in PKM.

The case for PKM

Clark Quinn

Apparently, an acquaintance challenged my colleague Harold Jarche’s Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM) model. So, I’ve talked about PKM before , but I want to elaborate. Here’s my take on the case for PKM. PKM integrates different frameworks, and creates a practical approach. The post The case for PKM appeared first on Learnlets.

PKM in action. Part 1

Harold Jarche

An essential element of PKM is to do ‘something’ As Tim Kastelle says, “the biggest gap is between those doing nothing and those doing something” While it’s good to have a trusted knowledge network, Jane Hart recommends — “Although I trust my network to feed me valid resources, it is always important to check any resources personally to ensure they meet my own high ‘quality control’ standards.”

PKM 185

simply PKM

Harold Jarche

PKM = personal knowledge mastery. Why is PKM necessary? How do I master PKM? Start with the three core perspectives of PKM: seek > sense > share. Read more about PKM. Participate in a PKM workshop. Most of us work with others. We cannot do everything alone. We need advice and guidance on complex matters. This requires a knowledge network. We most readily take advice from people we trust.

PKM 120

my pkm story

Harold Jarche

PKM shifts responsibility. To a great extend PKM [personal knowledge management] is about shifting responsibility for learning and knowledge sharing from a company to individuals and this is the greatest challenge for both sides. By 2009, I saw PKM as the missing component of most enterprise KM efforts. There were many other PKM models put forth, in addition to Lilia’s original work. By late 2009, I described PKM as our part of the learning contract.

PKM 191

Why PKM?

Harold Jarche

Lilia Efimova , the original inspiration for my PKM practices, has said that the main problem with personal knowledge management is that we need to take time now, in order to invest in the future. With a searchable knowledge base of thousands of blog posts and social bookmarks, all curated by me, I can see the value of PKM every day. Have you ever tried to find something you saw recently on the Net but don’t remember where you found it?

PKM in Action. Part 2

Harold Jarche

In PKM in Action Part 1 I gave a few examples of how people practice personal knowledge mastery. A good way of looking at PKM is as a method to improve serendipity, or fortuitous chance encounters. PKM practices do not have to be difficult. Two PKM methods I came across are the Fitness Circuit and Double-loop Learning to create micro-articles. Integrating PKM with team learning and knowledge management starts to connect personal learning with collaborative work.

In my opinion, the core of PKM is 2) sensing, though 1) active observation is necessary to feed sense-making processes and 3) sharing with others creates better feedback loops. PKM Workshops

Harold Jarche

Stephen Dale also gave his take on PKM. Importantly, beyond the simple bits and bytes, PKM is about making connections between these artifacts and the people who create them or influence them. PKM is about getting things done. The final scheduled personal knowledge management workshop finishes this weekend. With four workshops this year and 110 participants, I have learned as much as anyone else.

PKM and small business

Harold Jarche

PKM could get them to engage in networks that can help their business. Time to get adept at PKM is likely seen as an unaffordable luxury for small business owners. There is one group that probably has the most need for professional development but has the least time – owners of small businesses. My parents owned a small business. They worked seven days a week. They never took any training courses.

PKM and MOOC

Harold Jarche

In the complex domain , combining PKM with more structure for social learning, using the MOOC format, can be an important addition to how workplace learning is supported. Informal Learning Learning NetworkedLearning PKM SocialLearning Workplace training and education too often resembles modern playgrounds: safe, repeatable, easily constructed from component parts, requiring that the child bring little of their own to the experience – Johnnie Moore.

Absorbing complexity with PKM

Harold Jarche

This is PKM and the Seek > Sense > Share framework. My aim in promoting personal knowledge mastery (PKM) is to provide a framework that anyone can build upon. The PKM in 40 Days online workshop is designed as a light structured approach to develop some of the skills needed to build your professional learning network. I talk about PKM to a wide variety of people. Have you ever heard of the Law of Requisite Variety ?

PKM 190

pkm 2016

Harold Jarche

PKM puts us in charge of our learning. The PKM framework shows the need to develop a knowledge network and connect with mechanical and human filters, curators, and aggregators of information. PKM is based on the premise that work is learning, and learning is the work. “Any man who reads too much and uses his brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.” ” —Albert Einstein.

PKM in 34 pieces

Harold Jarche

One of my objectives with the current PKM Workshop [there''s still time to sign up] was to review most of my resources and work on developing new ones. Much of my work on PKM has been inspired by others. This graphic combines the work of several people into a single aide-mémoire on PKM and the Seek – Sense – Share framework.

PKM 208

PKM in 2013

Harold Jarche

Personal knowledge management (PKM) is a set of processes, individually constructed, to help each of us make sense of our world and work more effectively. The PKM framework I have developed over the past eight years suggests two more steps: sense-making and sharing. PKM, or learning in networks, is a continuous process of seeking, sensing, and sharing. These directly align with the PKM framework of Seek, Sense, Share.

PKM 217

PKM as pre-curation

Harold Jarche

The most important part of personal knowledge management (PKM), in my opinion, is the need for active sense-making. One strength of PKM is the “manual” nature of sense-making activities. Sense-making, or placing information into context, is where the real personal value of PKM lies. The knowledge gained from PKM is an emergent property of all its activities. I practice PKM for myself and my blog’s primary audience is me. PKM SocialLearning

PKM 211

What is your PKM routine?

Harold Jarche

The most important aspect of PKM is that it is personal. My colleague Jane Hart shared her daily PKM routine recently and it’s different from mine, which of course it should be. I recently chatted with Sacha Chua about PKM and archiving large blogs. So I would like to ask: What kind of PKM routine do you practice? In order to stick with a routine over time, people have to find what works for them.

The PKM value-add

Harold Jarche

During my online conversation ( recording on YouTube ) with Jane Hart yesterday, we discussed personal knowledge management (PKM) and one very important aspect, in my opinion, is the need for active sense-making. But sense-making, or placing information into context, is where the real personal value of PKM lies. The knowledge gained from PKM is an emergent property of all its activities. One strength of PKM is the “manual” nature of sense-making activities.

PKM and innovation

Harold Jarche

One way to practice these skills would be to promote personal knowledge management (PKM) in the workplace. In an organization where everyone is practising PKM, the chances for more connections increases. PKM is a framework that enables the re-integration of learning and work and can help to increase our potential for innovation. Innovation PKMIn the FastCoDesign article, How do you create a culture of innovation?

PKM 205

PKM made simple

Harold Jarche

Here is a simple, but by no means only, method of putting personal knowledge master y into practice. It is based on the seek > sense > share model. Use a feed aggregator to collect all your online news and information resources in one place. I would suggest Feedly or Inoreader. Carry a notebook to collect insights as you go through your day. A notes application for your mobile device would work as well. Determine what areas you want to learn more about.

A theoretical model for PKM

Harold Jarche

My focus on PKM developed after an initial personal need and then increased when I saw how personal knowledge management could help others. Ricky) Cheong asked the following research questions: RQ1: What are the roles of PKM in the Knowledge Management Process? RQ2: What are the values of PKM for individuals and organisations? RQ3: Is there any correlation between the roles of PKM in Knowledge Management Processes and the values of PKM for individuals and organisations?

Seeking feedback on PKM

Harold Jarche

We are just finishing the second PKM in 40 Days online workshop this year. Each workshop is different but it is always great to get serious feedback on what PKM means for those who have undertaken the workshop. I am realising the benefits of practicing what the PKM concept preaches…. Is a book on PKM needed now, and if so why? Should I write a book on a different subject, other than PKM?

Barriers to PKM

Harold Jarche

A few weeks ago I asked my extended online network, “ What do you think is the biggest fear/need/barrier when it comes to adopting personal knowledge management (PKM) as a practice? ” Finding someone to talk to about PKM was a common response, as was the observation that management’s perception is often that not everyone has the same level of ability to do PKM sufficiently well. PKM practices can help people take off those weights.

PKM is not a technology

Harold Jarche

My definition of personal knowledge management is quite short: PKM: A set of processes, individually constructed, to help each of us make sense of our world, work more effectively, and contribute to society. PKM is not a technology, an enterprise system, a piece of software, or a platform. If anyone is selling you a PKM system, they do not understand it. PKM helps individuals, organizations, and society. PKM is every person’s part of the new social contract in the network era, in my opinion. We are just finishing our third PKM online workshop. Here are some thoughts on PKM from workshop participants: Connecting with those who are in the know is the best way to learn how to navigate this new learning environment. Another way to contribute is by sharing your stories of what PKM has meant to you.
