Becoming personal knowledge managers

Harold Jarche

Tweet Nick Milton highlights an overview of knowledge management (KM) from Susan Camarena , CKO at the Federal Transit Authority, which includes: How do we implement KM? Like: Saving numbers of the “right” person to call on an old, wrinkled and well used piece of paper. This is the root of personal knowledge management (PKM). The only knowledge that can be managed is our own.

That’s the top layer of my Personal Knowledge Management set-up. Teach a man to fish… PKM: Figuring out what’s important to you, how to find it, how to keep up with it, how to make sense of it, how to recall it when you need it anew, and how to share it with others — this is ground zero for mining the riches of the web. Bookstore shelves overflow with books on blogging , but I’ve yet to see one on PKM.

From Learning Management to Personal Knowledge Management

Jane Hart

If you want to grow as a person and a worker and if you want to gain skills that will help you take that next step in your career, you’ll probably have to learn those skills on your own. But in fact it has been clear for some time that many individuals are already taking responsibility for not only acquiring new knowledge and skills but for a wide range of activities for their continuous learning and professional development.

personal knowledge management & wisdom

Harold Jarche

And while there are different ways to think of knowledge – processed, procedural, propositional – this model I think adheres to a more basic view. Data does not create information; information does not create knowledge and knowledge does not create wisdom. People use their knowledge to make sense of data and information. People create information that represents their knowledge, which can then be more widely shared. Data + Knowledge = Information.

Twitter is one of the most powerful knowledge sharing and relationship building tools on the web. By David Gurteen Eric Mack thinks that within 18 months Twitter will change our world. I agree! I see three key benefits of using Twitter: It lowers resistance to sharing information. The 140 character limitation is now a strength.) It makes it easy to tap into a global mindset. Why do I need KM?

Harold Jarche

In response to my post on relevance , my long-time friend Ralph Mercer asked, “ Why do I need KM at an institutional level when information is ambient at a global level and personal at a hyper local level? ” This illuminates an observation made by Thierry deBaillon , which I have often quoted, “The basic unit of social business technology is personal knowledge management, not collaborative workspaces.”

For execution, we have training, performance support, performance coaching, assistance from others by cooperating, and self-designed or acquired support as part of personal knowledge management (PKM). curiosity yields insight

Harold Jarche

Curiosity about online sensemaking led me to Lilia Efimova’s research on personal knowledge management in 2004. From this I developed the personal knowledge mastery (PKM) framework driven by my situation of working remotely. No tool dominated so there was a lot of work on tool selection and I had several early projects for selecting learning management systems. The aim is to find a selection of practices that will work for each person.

The only knowledge that can be managed is our own

Harold Jarche

“Every amateur epistemologist knows that knowledge cannot be managed. Education has always assumed that knowledge can be transferred and that we can carefully control the process through education. The only knowledge that can be managed is our own. In my opinion, knowledge management should be about supporting personal knowledge management in networks, a distributed, not centralized, approach.

more than re-skilling

Harold Jarche

Here is the advice of the co-founder of Degreed on a ‘ workplace self-training paradigm ‘ First, encourage them to think of reskilling as a game — one they now have more control over winning … Next, help workers manage their skills with regular checkups to evaluate their current expertise against market conditions … Finally, work with employees to pinpoint opportunities to put their new skills into action.

“taking responsibility for our own work and learning”

Harold Jarche

“To a great extent PKM [personal knowledge management] is about shifting responsibility for learning and knowledge sharing from a company to individuals and this is the greatest challenge for both sides. Creativity, learning or desire to help others cannot be controlled, so knowledge workers need to be intrinsically motivated to deliver quality results. In this case ‘command and control’ management methods are not likely to work.

PKM and competitive intelligence

Harold Jarche

The Wikipedia says: A broad definition of competitive intelligence is the action of defining, gathering, analyzing, and distributing intelligence about products, customers, competitors and any aspect of the environment needed to support executives and managers in making strategic decisions for an organization. As a distributed team, each person can be responsible for a specific information source that is monitored regularly. CI is really just a focused type of knowledge management.

Complex knowledge

Harold Jarche

Last week I spent several hours each day, for four consecutive days, trying to share complex knowledge. I had my understanding of communities of practice, personal knowledge management, leadership, and innovation that I wanted to share. My friend and colleague Christian Renard had his knowledge about marketing, business, and digital power to share. From the time I was picked up at the Gare du Nord we began to share our knowledge through many conversations.

PKM: our part of the social learning contract

With social learning, everyone contributes to collective knowledge and this in turn can make organizations and society more effective in dealing with problems. How does personal knowledge management relate to social learning? The whole is greater than the sum of the parts as we build on the knowledge of others.
