A New Website, Part Six - Drupal Modules

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Modules A module is some additional programming that gives your site some additional functionality. A number of optional modules come installed with the original Drupal download. In addition, you can get many more modules from the Drupal web site. The first step, then, is to look at the list of modules that comes with the Drupal download. So I select 'Site Building' -> 'Modules'. So I activate the module. This will happen for every module.

Returning to constraints

Dave Snowden

If you do a search on ‘constraints’ on the web site you will see a first history, but this 2017 post has the main links and I followed it up the next day with more detail.

Module 242

Designing E-Learning 3.0 in gRSShopper - 1

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

I did a bit of searching around and determined that the overall structure is pretty common: - course - modules - an array of individual units of instruction - sections - an array of individual offerings of the course Like this: Figure 1. I already have a 'course' table in gRSShopper from previous experiments, so I'll make a 'module' table and a 'section' table. I'm making a module table so I typed 'module' in the form. Let's define what I want in a module.

Also, I wanted to be able to put videos on the Event page and even on the Modules page. I need to associate each video with an event, and with a module. I could do this in either the Media Editor or the Event Editor and Module Editor. Figure 70 - Media form in Form Editor I've added course, module and event as keylists. elements, a Typeahead - for longer lists, a form to page, plus a search/lookup feature I won't be able to do all of that now.

Module 127

Serverless Computing - An Innovative Approach to Software Development

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Serverless is an approach to software development for quickly building and deploying applications as a collection of loosely coupled modules and microservices. Serverless applications are woven or composed from a collection of loosely coupled, lightweight modules or microservices. Each such module is only given resources when triggered by another application module or invoked by an external function.

Designing E-Learning 3.0 in gRSShopper - 2

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

In the previous segment I decided to create a course with modules and sections, and set up the modules. I'll fill out the actual content of those modules over time. What I want to do is list the course modules and events (there's only one course so I don't need to list courses). p (I have to do a Google search on 'WinSCP show hidden files' to remember how to find hidden files like.htaccess -- ah, here it is.) Figure 15 - where are my modules?

“… intire of it selfe”

Dave Snowden

An early effort kicked this off back in 2016 and there are more posts if you search for ‘constraints’ on the website. Take those linear stages and define them as modulators with a complex system that can occur in different strengths and frequency in different contexts.

Module 229

Frustrated With Drupal

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

I got to explore, for example, the Drupal Actions and Workflow modules. The search results thrown up by the site on any search are utterly useless. Try the Send Module , which in turn requires the MimeMail Module. I cannot use these modules to send anything. Forget trying to use Drupal to send emails, I'll just do that manually, and use the Drupal Mailman Manager module to allow people to subscribe and unsubscribe from mailing lists.

I did a lot of searching for suitable images. After much more searching and testing, I decided on the Fauria LAMP image. I also wanted to install a number of Perl modules. I used server_test.cgi to see what modules I still needed to install. What, again? Yes, again.

Five Steps to Making Your Content Mobile Ready

One of four online searches is currently conducted on a mobile device 2. Bersin by Deloitte cites the top two factors: the overwhelming volume of content, and the lack of effective search. As in software development, where Agile can be started with just a single module, Xyleme customers begin Agile development with a single content nugget, such as a topic, lesson, or procedure.

Three specific aims: - create an EP environment for the organizers - create an EP environment for the students - help people create their own EP The design principles for the course modules: - non-stop, always open, self-study, self-paced - customizable, task-oriented - use and reuse OER (content) - creation of the ''learning scenario'' - orient them toward tangible results - create sharing options through the social web The course is made up of 7 modules (which I won''t list here).

Module 195

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

As with the JSON feed for Feeds in the previous post, I decided to use a 'datatype' element to make this clear (which is a major reason to make RSS this way, and not with standard Perl RSS modules - because you simply can't extra custom elements on the fly with the Perl module). - because when you use ~ (as in url~youtube) it executes a regular expression search, which means (a) regular expression characters can be used (yay!)

Content as a Service

Xyleme

With a library of granular learning assets at your fingertips, you can create content assembly applications that let your users assemble their own learning products by searching, selecting, and sequencing content into new eLearning courses, ePubs, Common Cartridges, QTI assessments, and more. This includes your eLearning modules, PDFs, movies, podcasts, articles, etc. For better or worse, the development of learning content has been a one-way push process.

This is something that can generate a lot of labour in a hurry (9 modules times 10 people means 90 badges issued.). It works like this: Create module (associated with knowledge (in the future, maybe, associated with competencies or whatever) Create Task (associated with Module) Create Badge (associated with Badge) Receive Link (to a webpage) (associated with Task) Award Badge (to author associated with link) Notify author (via Badgr, WebReference, other?)

A sense of direction (3)

Dave Snowden

I’m going to assume past knowledge here by the way and I don’t have time to make all the linkages to prior posts so you may need to do a search or two if the material is familiar. How much of the recent past can we account for/model by the modulators we are aware of?

Module 139

A New Website, Part Eleven - Content Construction

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

First of all, how do define events: I needed to decide between the ' Calendar ' module and the 'CCK' module. How about the Calendar module? First I had to find it - once again, Drupal's awful search made what should have been a one-minute job a ten minute exercise in frustration. I don't understand the thinking behind the module pages in Drupal. And why doesn't the 'support forum' link to a module-specific support forum?

Drupal 100

Drupal Documentation

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The problem is (a) that the Drupal website is very badly organized, and (b) searches for Drupal help are generally futile, and (c) help that is located is often obsolete or wrong In other words, the solution is out of our hands. Hence, a search for something specific displays a long list of meaningless chatter, rather than a help page. Boilerplate links to generic pages (something very common in the module documentation) should be avoided.

The Need to Adapt to the Speed of Change or Die: lessons for L&D from the retail industry

Charles Jennings

The Importance of Speed I think Eric Schmidt made an excellent observation when he explained why Google’s interface is so simple – no ads, no clutter, just a query box, a banner (sometimes replaced by a ‘doodle’) and two buttons - ‘search’ and ‘I’m feeling lucky’ (I’ve yet to find anyone who regularly uses the latter). I recall using one enterprise LMS that required 13 clicks of a mouse (some counter-intuitive) to register and launch an eLearning module.

progressive: communication based pedagogies, comment developed modules, drag and drop UIs, mobile platfors, innovative workflows, integration media, etc. The approach now is for Moodle HQ to focus on a platform, such that other people can build modules on top of it. Many people want the traditional locked down LMS, where students are seen as needing competencies and knowledge, where content is to be dumped, absorbed, and pumped out via tests.

Views Over the weekend I installed the Views module and experimented with it. Happily this module does exactly what I want it to do: it allows me to describe a list of records I would like displayed on a page or a block, and it then displays them for me. Using the CCK module, I have determined that I can create new data types that emulate the tables in my old system, including even the links between records that I use. I eventually found the module here.

Less is more: A different approach to L&D in a world awash with information

Charles Jennings

Having the metadata and the search skills is far more useful than memorising the detailed information in this and many other situations in the day-to-day pursuit of our work and life. This is a very different world than one focused on producing modules, courses and curricula full of ephemeral information – detailed content that has a relatively short half-life and is unlikely to be remembered in any detail beyond a post-course assessment, even if to that point.

What will help is that in addition to the standard modules, which I covered in the previous installment, Drupal has hundreds of additional modules. Creating new node modules allows developers to define and store additional fields in the database that are specific to your site's needs. Some more searching revealed some more discussion, including more posts from Digital Spaghetti but also some from gusaus talking about structured blogging.

What Universities Must Learn About Social Networks

How do I search for information?”. The ease of assembling software applications from plug-and-play modules and checkboxes has led numerous faculty members to build social network systems in-house. What Universities Must Learning About Social Networks. By Jay Cross | Chief Executive Officer, Internet Time Alliance. Increasingly, businesses are looking to more social approaches to employee learning and development. Higher education institutions must capitalize on this shift.

Introduction to Social Networking

Harold Jarche

tools are a form of social networking, but for this module we’re going to focus on “ego-centric&# social networks, those that are focused on individuals, as opposed to networks that build up around objects, such as Delicious, Flickr, Slideshare, etc. Each network offers different types of search capabilities and once you’ve located a potential friend, you must send an “invitation” to invite them into your personal network.

Traditional Model – Content-centric learning The standard approach has been to expect people to learn all the content in a structured learning event – whether it’s an ILT or eLearning module, course or programme. Basic conceptual tools such as critical thinking skills , analytics skills , logic , search skills , data validation skills , research methodologies skills and so on fall into the core concepts bucket.
