I do a lot of presentations where one of the topics is how to use LinkedIn more effectively as part of your knowledge work. In most cases, I will ask for a show of hands: How many of you have a LinkedIn Account? How many of you actively use LinkedIn? How many of you get really high value from LinkedIn? - Now down to 2-5% I am continually surprised by this result ( Getting Value from LinkedIn ).

Last week LinkedIn reached a significant milestone: 100 million users. On the occasion LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman sent out an email to the first 100,000 users thanking them for being early adopters. You can look it up yourself in your LinkedIn profile URL; it is the number after “id=”. LinkedIn seemed to me to be one of the most promising newcomers. As it happens this model closer to LinkedIn than any of the other major social networking platforms of today.

I also discussed being more or less open as a LinkedIn Networker: My LinkedIn Open Connection Approach. Great set up for my presentation. Let's compare that to LinkedIn.

While your systems may vary, your results should be sources for you to find information, present yourself in your various communities, and to share your thoughts. I determined that LinkedIn was where I should harbor professional connections, so I trimmed my Facebook connections down and offer most anyone connected to elearning to connect to me on LinkedIn. And I use IFTTT to send blog announcements to Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is another tool I use to see what’s happening (and occasionally engage in). Keynote is my presentation tool. My presentations may get rendered to Powerpoint eventually out of necessity, but it’s my creation and preferred presentation tool.
