Facilitating Knowledge Work #wolweek

Clark Quinn

In the course of some work with a social business agency, was wondering how to represent the notion of facilitating continual innovation. This representation emerged from my cogitations, and while it’s not quite right, I thought I’d share it as part of Work Out Loud week. This is very much based on Harold Jarche’s Seek-Sense-Share model for Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM).

PKM: The Book

Harold Jarche

I have been writing about personal knowledge management on this blog since 2004. PKM helps individuals, organizations, and society. The more and better we share our knowledge, the more resilient become our networks. PKM is every person’s part of the new social contract in the network era, in my opinion. We are just finishing our third PKM online workshop. If I do not have to search for my next paid work contract, then I can focus on the book.

world that included a post by Bill Ives - Managing Personal Knowledge: Setting a Foundation for Transformation? adoption is getting folks to manage their personal knowledge and adopt practices like blogging for personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal learning. Learning-Knowledge-Work - they really are the same and I need to do them all at once. If you make these independent and distinct, it will be really annoying for us knowledge workers.

Why do I need KM?

Harold Jarche

” This illuminates an observation made by Thierry deBaillon , which I have often quoted, “The basic unit of social business technology is personal knowledge management, not collaborative workspaces.” Collaborative knowledge work must be coupled with cooperative knowledge sharing. Cooperation, or sharing without any quid pro quo , is the foundation of personal knowledge management. The results of PKM can then be used in collaborative work.

The Seek > Sense > Share Framework

Simple standards facilitated with a light touch, enables knowledge workers to capture, interpret and share their knowledge. Personal knowledge management is a set of processes, individually constructed, to help each of us make sense of our world and work more effectively. But what we loosely call knowledge, using terms like knowledge-sharing or knowledge capture, is just an approximation. Good curators are valued members of knowledge networks.

Learning and development (L&D) practices reflect this priority on error reduction. But knowledge work, especially creative work, is not mere production. Now visualize the workflow of a creative knowledge worker: nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, flash of brilliance, nothing, nothing, nothing.” —Jay Most of these five triggers can be enhanced through informal and social learning, and the individual practice of personal knowledge mastery. mastery and models

Personal Knowledge Mastery. These disciplines have influenced my professional work which is based on individuals taking control of their learning and professional development and actively engaging in social networks and communities of practice. Personal knowledge mastery ( PKM ) is a framework I have developed over the past 12 years. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts as we build on the knowledge of others. It is a key aspect of PKM.

Social Media for Knowledge Workers

tools to improve your performance as a knowledge worker. This was a major reason that I started down the path with Work Literacy. That said, I thought it would be worthwhile for me to collect a few of the resources that provide good starting points that can help Knowledge Workers improve their performance using Social Media. Last week I had a presentation around using Social Media and Web 2.0

Tool Set 2009

I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. Setting up a SharePoint for a community or work team is very different from teaching them about Personal Learning. In fact, the lack of attention to this topic was the reason I founded Work Literacy in June of 2008. You need to understand your choices, try new methods and tools and adopting practices that improve your work and learning skills.

Social Learning, Complexity and the Enterprise

Corporations that understand the value of knowledge sharing, teamwork, informal learning and joint problem solving are investing heavily in collaboration technology and are reaping the early rewards. ~ Our relationship with knowledge is changing as our work becomes more intangible and complex.

The Evolving Social Organization

Innovation abounds in the early stages and knowledge capitalization is aided by a common vision of the business. Current management wisdom – based on Robin Dunbar’s research ; the size of military units through history; and the work of management experts such as Tom Peters – considers the ideal size of an organization to be around 150 people. However, knowledge, and the acquisition of new knowledge, are still key factors for innovation and effectiveness.
