Extrinsic rewards only work for simple physical tasks and increased monetary rewards can actually be detrimental to performance, especially with knowledge work. Rewards are still an important aspect to consider in workplace performance. A nalyzing Performance Problems.
Seeing motivation with new eyes
JUNE 22, 2010
Where there is a genuine lack of skills and knowledge, training may be required, but it should only be in cases where the other barriers to performance have been addressed. There’s a compensation “system and we’ve just accepted it for many decades.
Business Practice Redesign
JANUARY 5, 2017
Maybe they’re actually becoming a barrier to performance improvement rather than a prerequisite for performance improvement. If we’re spending more and more of our time outside established processes, maybe we should shift our focus away from processes and focus instead on the practices that small, front line work groups use to improve their performance over time by learning faster on the job. Learning faster to accelerate performance improvement.
A personal learning journey
AUGUST 2, 2010
I became interested in knowledge management (KM) as I was introduced to it in the mid 1990’s while practising instructional systems design (ISD) and human performance technology (HPT) in the military. In the late 1990’s knowledge management was part of our solution suite at the Centre for Learning Technologies ( CLT via The Wayback Machine). Luckily the web had evolved and there were consumer alternatives to enterprise systems.
What Are the Chances of Pragmatic Pathways for Social Business?
JULY 31, 2012
“ As a journalist, you know you are doing your job properly when you manage to upset rich, powerful and entitled people who are used to getting their own way. Well, they amplify flows of knowledge and information, inside an organisation, but across organisations, too!
What’s working in social business
JUNE 24, 2012
Like the knowledge management and e-learning hype phases of the 90′s and ’00′s respectively, social business is being led by software vendors. Some are even the same vendors that MIT’s Peter Senge said co-opted the field of knowledge management.

Leveraging collective knowledge
AUGUST 4, 2010
This week, a few related knowledge management (KM) articles crossed my path and I’d like to weave them together. Nancy Dixon discusses three eras of knowledge management as moving from Explicit Knowledge (document management) to Experiential Knowledge (communities of practice; expertise locators) and now to Collective Knowledge (social media). The illusion of knowledge.
temporary, negotiated hierarchies
MARCH 8, 2016
In the triple operating system (Awareness > Alternatives > Action) work gets done by self-governing work teams with a degree of autonomy operating in temporary, negotiated hierarchies. This is full autonomy which is necessary for the network era, because you cannot manage a network.

Getting to Working Smarter
DECEMBER 5, 2010
The Training Development branch was also keen on performance improvement and much of our own professional development reflected the practices of human performance technology. HPT is a good framework, and is an excellent addition to instructional systems design (ISD), but over time I have found it to be inadequate to deal with a more complex workplace and address the social aspects of work.

Ten years after
Jay Cross's Informal Learning
JANUARY 10, 2009
Machine-age managers complained when employees had downtime because they were in training. In the face of massive change, it’s tempting to sit things out, make a few improvements here and there, watch the 1,000 channels of television when they arrive. A great year of improving efficiency in a mature business yields what? A 20% improvement on the bottom line? A 100% improvement? Why is this a management responsibility? Knowledge is power.
