Informal Learning – the other 80%. Employees and partners with more capacity to learn are more versatile in adapting to future conditions. Because organizations are oblivious to informal learning, they fail to invest in it. Learning is social.

Formalizing informal learning?

The Entreprise Collaborative has a new question , asking whether we can formalize informal learning. To me, it’s not about formalizing informal learning so much as explicitly supporting it versus ignoring it. Like the proverbial ’stuff’, informal learning happens. To me, it is more a matter of providing infrastructure to support informal learning, and facilitating informal learning as well.

I received an email asking me if I knew of any Wikis that provided information on eLearning concepts. there's not really a place where you can find a Wiki that covers eLearning concepts. You can certainly go to Wikipedia and find information about learning concepts including eLearning and eLearning 2.0. We released our first white paper, on Social Learning , at the Collaborative Enterprise last week. For me, the essence of social learning is that as our work becomes more complex, we need faster feedback loops to stay on top of it. Courses, with their long development cycle, are inadequate to meet the learning and performance needs of those dealing with complexity. The course is an artifact of a time when information was scarce and connections were few.
