Keeping the faith?

Dave Snowden

The decision we made is the make the incipient wiki on methods open-source (I suspect we will be there by the new year along with some other significant initiatives) which means that a community can develop around their use. This was planned a year ago but there were legal issues as well as concern about firewalls. That became a boundary that had to go, hence the shift to making them open. Just as a warning, this is a rather rambling post.

Open Innovation Re-visited

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

At the time, a number of research institutions and leading edge companies were already using clusters of Intel processors running Linux as a way of building relatively inexpensive, and increasingly powerful supercomputers, as well as highly scalable web servers, distributed file and print servers, network firewalls , and other Internet infrastructure applications. days, the community concept behind open source was mystifying to many.

Reflections on Linux and Mainframes

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Later that decade, Linux was also widely used in a variety of Internet applications, including web servers and firewall systems. . Seamless support of open source tools and software, including Apache Spark , Node.js , MongoDB , MariaDB , PostgreSQL , Chef and Docker. Many welcomed IBM’s strong support of Linux and open source in general.

Makers – Review

Harold Jarche

Doctorow delves just deep enough into the future of open source, crowd-sourcing, personal video surveillance and other current trends to give some idea of their large scale potential. You try to get an experimental service running and no one will reconfigure the firewall. I don’t read much fiction but I must say I truly enjoyed Cory Doctorow’s Makers , set in the near distant future. It is neither techno-utopian nor dystopian.

Lead Social Business Enabler for IBM’s w3 and www Connections – Job Role and Responsibilities

Luis Suarez

Looks like the new job may have triggered a new, fresh interest in Social / Open Business for fellow colleagues, specially, when they are no longer pondering about the Why or the What but diving right into the How. And that is a good thing, that’s one of the many reasons why I got hired into this position in the first place: help Social / Open become the new fabric of how fellow knowledge workers get work done by becoming part of their collaboration DNA.

The Smart Worker : shares what s/he learns

People often cite Wikipedia as a unreliable source since it is a “collaborative&# encyclopaedia. But if you want to keep the materials as close to the workflow as possible, then other tools are available for in-house, behind-the-firewall, enterprise use. Blockchain Killer-Apps

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Blockchain technologies should help us enhance the security of digital transactions and data, by developing the required common services for secure communication, storage and data access, along with open source software implementations of these standard services, supported by all major blockchain platforms , such as Hyperledger and Ethereum. The more data sources a trusted ecosystem has access to, the higher the probability of detecting fraud and identity theft.

Is Blockchain the Major Next Step in the Evolution of the Internet

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The WEF report compared the blockchain to the Internet, noting that “Like the Internet, the blockchain is an open, global infrastructure upon which other technologies and applications can be built. As Don Tapscott and Alex Tapscott wrote in the opening paragraph of their recently published book Blockchain Revolution , “It appears that once again, the technological genie has been unleashed from its bottle.

Need for collaboration continues to grow

Harold Jarche

Collaboration needs grow as a result of layoffs, mergers, and deepening external partnerships (requiring new infrastructure to collaborate outside the firewall with trusted, external partners). We set up a collaborative space outside the firewall and work with clients in their particular business context. We use open source technologies so clients can decide how and where they grow their communities, with no strings attached.

Building a Solid Library of Use Cases

I have been advocating for social software tools (as an opportunity to explore their huge potential in terms of how they help us become more effective at what we do by becoming more open, collaborative and innovative) from as early as 2000, when I was first exposed to different instances of blogs and wikis, whether inside or outside of the firewall, along with what today would be known as social profiles. Firefox, another really successful open source project. Open sources is a success, we all know that, it's nothing new. But how does open source software development work? Almost every open source project uses peer review. What github does is allow your entire open source development is open? What we're interested in at github is where we take all these ideas, and put them inside a firewall, with permissions, etc.,

I tried to capture things down as they were said, here are my notes: Firewalls IP Privacy / Confidentiality Security Control over Quality of Information Strict Control Over Policies – Accuracy Liability / Discoverability / Compliance Change Management – Ready for It / Culture Management Take it Seriously – Away from Work Education of Management Lack of Resources – Mobile Devices Push Back from Workforce - Adoption This is a pretty good list of commonly cited barriers.

Is it too late to save the Net from the carriers?

Doc Searls

Both pieces are in Wired , which is clearly on our side with this thing — especially since, if Marvin is right, Wired might someday need to pay the carriers for privileged carriage on what used to be the free and open (aka “neutral”) Internet. Are you ready to see the Net’s free and open marketplace sucked into a pit of pipes built and fitted by the phone and cable companies and run according to rules lobbied by the carrier and content industries?

Words of Wisdom*

Clark Quinn

Our IT group changed the infrastructure a year ago, to *open source* (I don’t know what they were thinking), but fortunately my vendor says that they’d be happy to help change the installation to work with the new services architecture. We strictly firewall off access to the outside, as we don’t want people getting information that hasn’t been vetted internally. Another option, if you want to share within your organisation, would be to use an open source social bookmarking system and bring it inside your company’s firewall, but that would take some cooperation from the IT department. Why do we care about some things and not others? | Daniel Pink

I think coaches and parents and peers can help to form a “firewall” around a team, to create an environment where some of the pressure to perform and negative effects of failure to perform lifted off players, so that it OK to fail sometimes. It’s an open-source volleyball tournament, occasioned by the holidays. I don’t see kids playing on their own much anymore, even though we live very near a large open playground. Dan Pink. Contact.
