How to be an elearning expert

Clark Quinn

So here’s one take on how to be an elearning expert. Learning Solutions or eLearn Mag are two places to put stuff that’s sensibly rigorous but written for practitioners. So that’s my take on how to be an elearning expert.

Engaging Learning and the Serious eLearning Manifesto

Clark Quinn

There were nine elements that characterized why learning should be ‘hard fun’ More recently, we released the Serious eLearning Manifesto. Here we had eight values that differentiated between ordinary elearning and serious elearning. What is the alignment between Engaging Learning and the Serious eLearning manifesto? The elements of the Serious eLearning Manifesto (SeM) are pretty straightforward.

Getting Serious about eLearning

Clark Quinn

Well, I won’t give it all away, since we’re doing an official launch next week, but in short, we’re attempting to do something about what we perceive as the sorry state of elearning. It’s an honor to be able to work with Will, Julie, & Michael on this, and if you care about good elearning (and if you’re here, I figure that’s a safe bet :), I hope you’ll attend, and join us.

Q&A on the Future of Social, Mobile and eLearning

Dan Pontefract

I was asked to comment on a few questions related to eLearning, social learning, etc. What does the future of eLearning look like? I’ve always loathed the term eLearning. Many people are forced to take eLearning. If I could change anything, it would be to drop the ‘e’ of eLearning and call it what it really should purport to be offering: interactive learning. Far too many eLearning offerings remain ‘click next’ rote memory exercises.

mLearning more than mobile elearning?

Clark Quinn

Someone tweeted about their mobile learning credo, and mentioned the typical ‘mlearning is elearning, extended’ view. Which I rejected, as I believe mlearning is much more (and so should elearning be). That would take me back to mlearning being more than just mobile elearning, as Jason Haag has aptly separated. Sure, mobile elearning can be a subset of mlearning, but not the whole picture.

elearning versus mlearning

Clark Quinn

pointed to this post saying “mLearning is starting to diverge from eLearning not only in specific meaning, but in approach and design as well”, and I want to politely disagree. Depends, of course, on what you mean by elearning, to start with. The clear implication is that elearning is about courses on the desktop. Of course, I acknowledge that, to most, elearning is the simple case. Mayra Aixa Avilar (who I hope to meet someday, maybe at mLearnCon ?)pointed

Just to note that Learnlets is now part of the blogs recorded in Tony Karrer’s eLearning Learning. As part of a Personal Learning Network for those in elearning, such a searchable repository is quite useful. I used it as a recommended resource for the upcoming Foundations Intensive elearning introduction event as part of the Learning Solutions conference.

Levels of eLearning Quality

Clark Quinn

Of late, I’ve been both reviewing eLearning, and designing processes & templates. As I’ve said before , the nuances between well-designed and well produced eLearning are subtle, but important. Reading a forthcoming book that outlines the future but recounts the past, it occurs to me that it may be worthwhile to look at a continuum of possibilities.

Reordering the Serious eLearning Manifesto

Clark Quinn

So, as you may know (and if you don’t, you should ), almost three years ago now, I teamed up with colleagues Michael Allen, Julie Dirksen, & Will Thalheimer (all worth knowing about) and put together the Serious eLearning Manifesto. So, we were (and are) frustrated with what was and is happening under the rubric of eLearning. Michael was intrigued by the concept of Serious Games, and wondered why we didn’t treat elearning seriously as well. (A

Reviewing elearning examples

Clark Quinn

I recently wrote about elearning garbage , and in case I doubted my assessment, today’s task made my dilemma quite clear. I was asked to be one of the judges for an elearning contest. Seven courses were identified as ‘finalists’, and my task was the review each and assign points in several categories. Only one was worthy of release, and only one other even made a passing grade. This is a problem. Let me get the good news out of the way first.

Clark Quinn

Rob Hubbard organized a suite of us to write chapters for a use-focused guide to elearning. The trouble is; the range of elearning technologies and the options available can seem bewildering. Even those who are highly experienced in one aspect of elearning will lack knowledge in some other areas. And here’s the Table of Contents, so you can see who wrote what: So What is eLearning?

eLearning Process Survey results!

Clark Quinn

So, a few weeks ago I ran a survey asking about elearning processes*, and it’s time to look at the results (I’ve closed it). eLearning process is something I’m suggesting is ripe for change, and I thought it appropriate to see what people thoughts. This was a set of questions deliberately digging into areas where I think elearning falls down, and (at least with this group of respondents), it’s not good as I’d hope, but not as bad as I feared.

My interest is in finding out about the processes used in designing and delivering elearning. In the interests of understanding where the market is, I’m looking to benchmark where organizations are. Sure, there are other data points, but I have my own questions I would like to get answered. So I’ve created a quick survey of seven questions (thanks, SurveyMonkey) I’d love for you to fill out.
