Learning Analytics Courses

George Siemens

After about a year of planning, we can finally announce the following courses on edX focusing on learning analytics. The intent of these courses is to eventually lead into a MicroMasters and then advance placement in an in-development Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at UTA. Each course runs about three weeks and we’ve tried to settle on prominent analytics tools for educational data so the experience is one where skills can immediately be applied.

Open Learning Analytics

George Siemens

While those sensemaking approaches won’t disappear, they will be augmented by data and analytics. Educators often find analytics frustrating. Or can analytics actually measure what matters instead of what is readily accessible in terms of data? All educators need to be familiar with data and analytics approaches, including machine and deep learning models. Open Learning Analytics. Learning Analytics Masters Program (LAMP).

Journal of Learning Analytics

Interest in learning analytics is growing. From my biased view, it is critical that educators are aware of the role of analytics in education because of the heaving influence algorithms, data, and analytics have on teaching, learning, and decision making in schools, colleges/universities, and corporate settings. SoLAR just announced the inaugural issue of Journal of Learning Analytics. It’s a data centric world and will only become more so in the future.

Transforming learning through analytics

George Siemens

Data, big data, analytics, and visualization are significant trends in education. There is much to be alarmed about with analytics, including the mechanization of teaching, learning, and assessment. My interest in learning analytics, however, doesn’t blind me to potential risks.

Open Learning Analytics. Again

George Siemens

Several years ago, a group of us wrote a concept paper on Open Learning Analytics (.pdf). Our goal was to create openness as a foundation for the use of data and analytics in education. Few things are more important in education today than the development of an open platform for analytics of learning data. It is here, in analytics and data use in education, that far more attention and awareness is needed than is currently evident.

Handbook of Learning Analytics (open)

George Siemens

When we started the learning analytics conference in 2011 , we aligned with ACM. To ensure broader dissemination, and cope with our guilt, of our research, we set up an open journal: Journal for Learning Analytics. I’m very excited about a new project that started as an idea during LAK13 in Leuven and is another commitment to openness by the Society for Learning Analytics Research : The Handbook of Learning Analytics.

In the background, many initiatives have continued to advance including entrepreneurship in education, participatory pedagogies, the maker movement, and learning analytics. Through SoLAR , we have been active in setting up a journal in learning analytics, hosting regional events , starting a distributed research lab , and our annual conference. One project that I’m quite excited about is our learning analytics summer institute at Stanford July 1-5, 2013.

One of the most significant trends is around learning analytics. Next week, we ( SoLAR , IEDMS and others) are organizing a Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI). While MOOCs are sucking all of the oxygen out of the educational technology conversation, significant trends are developing under the radar. A call for attendance was held earlier this year and the event was/is (massively) oversubscribed. We were only able to accept 100 attendees due to space and cost constraints.
