Learning Analytics Courses

George Siemens

After about a year of planning, we can finally announce the following courses on edX focusing on learning analytics. The intent of these courses is to eventually lead into a MicroMasters and then advance placement in an in-development Masters of Science in Learning Analytics at UTA. Each course runs about three weeks and we’ve tried to settle on prominent analytics tools for educational data so the experience is one where skills can immediately be applied.

The Transformative Power of Analytics - The Houston Astros: a Case Study

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The answer, in a nutshell, is analytics. Luhnow then brought his analytics and management skills to Houston and proceeded to transform the team into a top contender in a short few years. For certain elements of the analytics, we had to wait and be patient.

Big Data & Analytics in Recruiting

Open Learning Analytics. Again

George Siemens

Several years ago, a group of us wrote a concept paper on Open Learning Analytics (.pdf). Our goal was to create openness as a foundation for the use of data and analytics in education. Few things are more important in education today than the development of an open platform for analytics of learning data. It is here, in analytics and data use in education, that far more attention and awareness is needed than is currently evident.

Handbook of Learning Analytics (open)

George Siemens

When we started the learning analytics conference in 2011 , we aligned with ACM. To ensure broader dissemination, and cope with our guilt, of our research, we set up an open journal: Journal for Learning Analytics. I’m very excited about a new project that started as an idea during LAK13 in Leuven and is another commitment to openness by the Society for Learning Analytics Research : The Handbook of Learning Analytics.

Learning Analytics: Higher Education

George Siemens

Educational datamining and learning analytics are getting substantial attention in education. With learning analytics in particular, the term has come to mean anything and everything that involves data in learning. Learning Analytics: Higher Education

Transforming learning through analytics

George Siemens

Data, big data, analytics, and visualization are significant trends in education. There is much to be alarmed about with analytics, including the mechanization of teaching, learning, and assessment. My interest in learning analytics, however, doesn’t blind me to potential risks.

Learning Analytics

George Siemens

Have I mentioned we’re hosting a conference in beautiful Banff on Learning Analytics in February 2011? We’re trying to bring together the technical and the social/pedagogical aspects of learning analytics. The call for papers has been posted. Facebook/linkedin/TEL Europe group info supporting the conference can be found here. All technical makes Jack boring. All social makes Jack frustrated because he is unable to take advantage of technology affordances.

New MOOC: Data, Analytics, & Learning

George Siemens

This fall, together with colleagues, I’ll be offering an open course on edX: Data, Analytics, and Learning. From the description: In education, the use of data and analytics to improve learning is referred to as learning analytics. Analytics have not yet made the impact on education that they have made in other fields. The era of data and analytics in learning is just beginning.

Open Learning Analytics: A proposal

George Siemens

Learning analytics are increasingly relevant, and prominent, in education. Startups and established software vendors are targeting learning analytics in their product offerings for the education and training and development sector.

Reflecting on Learning Analytics and SoLAR

George Siemens

The Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference (LAK16) is happening this week in Edinburgh. I have great hope for the learning analytics field as one that will provide significant research for learning and help us move past naive quantitative and qualitative assessments of research and knowledge. Would you be interested in participating in a discussion on educational analytics (process, methods, technologies)? Not everyone was a fan of the idea of learning analytics.

Stanford Learning Analytics Summer Institute

George Siemens

In the background, many initiatives have continued to advance including entrepreneurship in education, participatory pedagogies, the maker movement, and learning analytics. Through SoLAR , we have been active in setting up a journal in learning analytics, hosting regional events , starting a distributed research lab , and our annual conference. One project that I’m quite excited about is our learning analytics summer institute at Stanford July 1-5, 2013.

Learning Analytics 2011: Reflections

George Siemens

On Feb 28-Mar 1 a group of 100 researchers, administrators, and academics (from 12 countries) converged in Banff, Alberta for the 1st International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge. Analytics will be huge in education and are coming faster than almost anyone can anticipate. Analytics are growing in prominence in many different disciplines and from all parts of the education system. Researchers from different fields found shared space in the analytics discussion.

Attend (online) the Learning Analytics Summer Institute

George Siemens

Last year, we held the Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI) at Stanford. Our interest and mission with the Society for Learning Analytics Research is to make data and algorithms open and accessible to researchers in order to create transparency around how analytics are being used in teaching and learning. If you are interested in learning analytics and how they are being deployed by researchers and students, please join us online.

George Siemens

I’m involved in two: Learning and Knowledge Analytics (LAK11) and the third iteration of Connectivism and Connective Knowledge (CCK11 – with Stephen Downes). The Learning Analytics course begins January 10 (sign up by joining this group: [link] …or if you prefer not to use a google account, track posts via RSS). Numerous open courses are kicking off in 2011.

Join us: Stanford Learning Analytics Summer Institute

George Siemens

One of the most significant trends is around learning analytics. Next week, we ( SoLAR , IEDMS and others) are organizing a Learning Analytics Summer Institute (LASI). While MOOCs are sucking all of the oxygen out of the educational technology conversation, significant trends are developing under the radar. A call for attendance was held earlier this year and the event was/is (massively) oversubscribed. We were only able to accept 100 attendees due to space and cost constraints.

Open Course: Learning Analytics and Knowledge

George Siemens

For the past several years, in preparation for our Learning Analytics Conference (this year in Leuven, Belgium, registration is now open ), we’ve been running an open online course on learning analytics. This year, we’ll be running our Learning Analytics and Knowledge course on Canvas Network.

The need for innovation across boundaries and the power of big data analytics

Ross Dawson

Big data analytics was probably rightly at the top of the list in terms of potential, though it is probably only a minority of companies that will truly tap that potential.

Analytics – The Usability Lab of the new decade

Adaptive Path

The gist of the internal response was, “Analytics!&# Analytics alone isn’t sufficient, so it’s best augmented with live intercepts of actual users engaging in real tasks. We’ve known about analytics, multi-variant and A/B testing, and the like for over a decade. Heck, 5 years ago, Adaptive Path began work on what became Measure Map, an analytics tool designed specifically for bloggers, our reaction to a marketplace full of bloated tools.

Light-weight learning analytics tools

George Siemens

I’ve heard of SNAPP before – &# software tool that allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from discussion forum posts and replies&# – but decided to play around with it today. This is a good example of a fairly simple, light-weight tool to analyze social interactions in an LMS like Moodle, Blackboard, or Desire2Learn.

Announcing Open Course: Learning & Knowledge Analytics

George Siemens

Adding to the mix, we’re (Jon Dron, Dave Cormier, Tanya Elias, and I) happy to announce an open course on Learning & Knowledge Analytics. The course is offered in preparation for the Learning and Knowledge Analytics conference (Banff, Feb 27-Mar 1, 2011). A number of open courses will be offered early 2011 (CCK11, PLEs, Digital Storytelling). Which is great!

Johns Hopkins Academic Freedom Statement - An Analytical Representation

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Drafted in January and just released, the Johns Hopkins statement on academic freedom will no doubt be widely cited.I cite the full text below. Note : on detailed analysis, the document reads as though it were actually two separate documents forxced into a not-always-happy merger.

Site Meter Removed - Google Analytics Instead

Tony Karrer

Just a quick note that I've been using SiteMeter and Google Analytics for a while now on my blog. On the other hand, it's tough to beat Google Analytics, especially for the price (free As I've reached 500 visitors a day on the site, I've found that SiteMeter didn't really allow for the detail information I wanted. It was nice as a quick hit information source and I'd still recommend say it was good as a starter approach to getting statistics.
