Thinking about design ‘thinking’

Dave Snowden

I’ve been thinking about the whole approach we are adopting to design thinking as the Whistler retreat approaches. I’ve designated this as ‘industrialised’ given IDEO’s latest approach to training and certification. This is useful in situations where people do not know what (to take one example) technology is capable of so they don’t know what to ask for. The 2019 Artificial Intelligence Index

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

AI has emerged as the defining technology of our era, as transformative over time as the steam engine, electricity, and the Internet. While still in its early stages, AI is already reshaping the economy, society, our personal lives and the very nature of work, with much more to come as the technology and applications mature, including the scientific research necessary to anticipate and fight future pandemics.

Chasing Technology Good and Bad

Clark Quinn

The fact is, we’re chasing the wrong technologies. The problem with the technologies we’re chasing is that we’re chasing them from the wrong beginning. The part that’s really wrong here is that they’re doing this on top of bad design! And, as I believe I’ve mentioned, gilded bad design is still bad design. Investment in, say, sims makes sense if you’re using it to implement good design (e.g. strategy technology

Technologies are teachers of habit.” Ultimately, it’s my belief that social networks are systems that can be intentionally designed, and intelligently managed, to ensure that their primary impact is a positive one for the people who use them, and for the world. Every fortnight I curate some of the observations and insights that were shared on social media. I call these Friday’s Finds. “We are creatures of habit. ” — @amicusadastra.

The roots of LXD

Clark Quinn

Instructional design, as is well documented, has it roots in meeting the needs for training in WWII. User experience (UX) came from the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) revolution towards User Centered Design. It’s worth thinking about the trajectories and the intersections that are the roots of LXD, Learning eXperience Design. Eager to continue my education, I avidly explored learning and instruction, technology (particularly AI), and design.

The State of AI in the Enterprise

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Overall, the 2018 survey found that “Early adopters are ramping up their AI investments, launching more initiatives, and getting positive returns.” Compared to executives in average companies, early adopters have been implementing key AI technologies at a growing rate, including machine and deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision. They should look at AI through the lens of business opportunities, rather than technologies.

Using Agile Processes to Develop AI-Based Solutions

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

In the waterfall development model , a project is broken down into a set of sequential phases, - e.g., conception, analysis, design, construction, testing, deployment, maintenance, - each dependent on the completion of the previous phase. Agile development is evolutionary in nature, based on the early availability of experimental prototypes, user feedback, continuous improvements, and rapid responses to technology, market and user requirements.

Labels for what we do

Clark Quinn

While it’s true for our field as a whole, it’s also true for the specific job of those who design formal learning. He goes through the usual candidates of labels for what we do – instructional designer, learning designer, learner experience designer – and finds flaws. And I agree with him on learning designer and instructional designer. So learning designer is out. Specifically, it will be across technologies as needed.

The Transformative Power of Blockchain

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

This is not unusual for potentially transformative technologies in their early stages, as was the case with the Internet in the early-mid 1990s. The key question is whether blockchain has the potential to become a truly transformative technology over time. InternetOne was designed to be a relatively simple, highly flexible, general purpose data network that would support a wide variety of applications in the InternetTwo layer.

Blockchain - the Networked Ecosystem is the Business

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

This is not unusual for potentially transformative technologies in their early stages, as was the case with the Internet, and is still the case with AI. The key question is whether blockchain has the potential to become a truly transformative technology over time. We’ve observed that organizations that launch their journeys by first designing and testing minimally viable ecosystems (MVE), rather than minimum viable products (MVP), have a greater chance to be successful.”.

How to Transform a “Big, Old” Company into an Agile Digital Business

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

“As consumers, we take digital technologies for granted… We don’t wonder why these things are possible; we simply expect them,” said Designed for Digital a recently published book by Jeanne Ross , Cynthia Beath , and Martin Mocker in its Preface. While in our personal lives we’ve enthusiastically embraced digital technology advances, many corporations and institutions still struggle to do so. What does designed for digital mean?

The Business Value of Augmented Reality

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

I recently heard a very interesting presentation at the 2019 MIT CIO Symposium , - Why Companies Need an Augmented Reality Strategy , - by Harvard professor Michael Porter and James Heppelmann , CEO of PTC , an industrial consulting company. D igital technologies are designed right into the products. AR comprises a set of technologies that superimposes computer generated digital data, images and animation on real world objects.

The Economic Value of Digital Identity

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The opportunity for expanding the use of good digital IDs is growing, as technologies improve and become more affordable, and as more people around the world have access to smartphones and the Internet. But, like other innovations, digital ID technologies can be used both to benefits society and for undesirable purposes. These risks must be taken into account in the design, implementation, and governance of any digital ID system.

In 2016, blockchain made the list of the World Economic Forum ’s Top Ten Emerging Technologies. However, most initiatives are still in alpha or beta stage… Long-term, Gartner believes this technology will lead to a reformation of whole industries.”.

Globalization in Transition

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

I recently read two interesting reports on the state of globalization in 2019, one by The Economist, the second by the McKinsey Global Institute. New automation technologies, changing factor costs, an expanding set of risks, and the increasing importance of speed to market in some industries are all driving localization in many goods-producing value chains.”.

Level of polish?

Clark Quinn

So, my first concern is the quality of the design. My mantra on design states that it has to be right first. But let’s assume that the design’s right. Perhaps the serious eLearning Design Manifesto? :) We can do better. It was pointed out that design teams in other disciplines work in layers: from concept to realization. That’s a design issue to begin, and then a presentation one. Gilded bad design is still bad design.

AI and the Evolution of History

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Several weeks ago, I wrote about the event I attended on February 28 to celebrate the launch of MIT’s new Schwarzman College of Computing, - MIT’s strategic response to the rise of artificial intelligence, - a technology that will reshape “geopolitics, our economy, our daily lives and the very definition of work” in the decades to come. The impact of internet technology on politics is particularly pronounced.

The Business Value of Resilience

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The Industrial Revolution was “as much about process innovations that reduced waste and increased productivity as it was about the application of new technologies,” wrote Roger Martin in a recent Harvard Business Review (HBR) article, - The High Price of Efficiency. Digital technologies, - the Internet in particular, - have played a central role in the rise of global, superstar firms.

Fostering an Innovation Culture: Talent, Discipline and Leadership

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Attempts to create novel technological or business models are fraught with uncertainty. But failure can also result from poorly thought-out designs, flawed analyses, lack of transparency, and bad management… One reason striking a balance is so hard is that the causes of failure are not always clear. Did a product design turn out to be flawed because of an engineer’s bad judgment or because it encountered a problem that even the most talented engineer would have missed?”.

Will Humans Be Better Off in an Increasingly AI-Based Future?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

After decades of promise and hype, artificial intelligence is finally becoming one of the most important technologies of our era. Experts worry that individuals are ceding control over many important decisions to AI-based technologies and tools. Surveillance and data systems are primarily designed for efficiency, profit and control. As AI continues to both spread and advance, will it enhance human capacities or will it lessen human autonomy and agency?

System 172

learning as disservice

Harold Jarche

“For example, Netflix uses machine learning algorithms in its recommendations system to offer personalized recommendations for streaming content; Uber matches providers of ride-sharing services with riders in an open marketplace; Adobe sells software as a subscription service, and startups such as Accredible use blockchain technology to create and manage digital certificates for training programs.” Humans are not in the service of algorithms, no matter who has designed them.

What Might Work Look Like in 2030?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

McKinsey’s overall conclusion was that a growing technology-based economy will create a significant number of new occupations which will more than offset declines in occupations displaced by automation. For simplicity, the study considered two possible outcomes for each variable: Technological Change. Developments in data science, AI, robotics, IoT, blockchain and other advanced technologies will have a major impact on labor markets over the next 10 - 15 years.

LXD Strategy

Clark Quinn

And I’ve come up with the phrase: Learning Experience Design (LXD) Strategist. Here I’m thinking about helping orgs restructure their design processes, and their org structure, to support delivering learning experience designs. It’s also about using the tools – media and technology – to create a well-integrated experience. It’s about getting the design right, then implementing. design strategy

systems thinking and training

Harold Jarche

Boeing became the world’s pre-eminent commercial airplane manufacturer in part because it developed a coherent design philosophy that relied on pilots’ airmanship as the last line of defense. Along the way, though, this system never managed to fully account for the unexpected: for the moment when technology fails and humans — a growing population of more than 300,000 airline pilots of variable and largely unpredictable skills — are required to intervene. What is innovation?

Harold Jarche

It turns out that to develop a ‘cumulative culture’ – technology that constantly ratchets up in complexity and diversity – a species needs to be able to share information very accurately. Knowledge artisans not only design the work, but they can also do the work. In writing almost 100 posts on innovation since 2007, it’s time to put the core observations together into a cohesive narrative. Here goes. Innovation is fifteen different things to fifteen different people.

The design wrote content into a framework that populated the manual (as prescribed by law) and the help system. design meta-learning social technologyI was talking with my lass, and reminiscing about a few things. And, it occurs to me, that I may not have mentioned them all. Worse, I confess, I’m still somewhat proud of them.

New reality

Clark Quinn

A colleague had built an engine that would allow experiences driven by communications technologies: text messages, email, phone calls, and these days we could add in tweets and posts on social media and apps. And, as I argue for extensively , good models give us principled bases for decisions and design. Here we’ve got a way to think about the relationship between story and technology that will let us figure out what makes the best approach for our goals.

The True Value of a Good Education: Adaptability to a Changing Environment

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Their job was to push the frontiers of knowledge by conducting both basic and applied research, which would hopefully lead to innovative technologies and products. The key criticism of the PhD process is that it’s been primarily designed to prepare students for tenure-track academic positions.

Learning Tools and Uni Change

Clark Quinn

As part of a push for Learning Engineering , Carnegie Mellon University recently released their learning design tools. I don’t completely align with their approach, but that’s ok, and I regularly cite their lead as a person who’s provided sage advice about doing good learning design. First, let’s be fair, most uni learning design isn’t very good. We need faculty and support staff to ‘get’ what good learning design is.

How Not to Adopt an LCMS

Xyleme

Modern learning organizations understand that, in order to provide learners with the resources they expect (such as content personalization, mobile learning, microlearning, and just-in-time support) new technology tools are no longer a “nice to have” — they’re a necessity. They can gather information on existing processes, work through the process changes, and design the rich library of templates needed for your organization.

Craft and commercial?

Clark Quinn

In learning technology, there’s been a gross pendulum swing, and maybe smaller ones. I think we’ve swung between craft and commercial approaches to design, and I’m hoping we’re on a return swing. When we first started playing with learning technology, every approach was pretty much hand-crafted. As technology changed, so to did the platforms. We’re learning more about good design, and more people are picking up on it.
