Liminal Cynefin & ‘control’

Dave Snowden

I was searching for my original known-unknown-unknowable matrix for today’s post and, as you do, came across a variation of Liminal Cynefin I used at and event to talk about the whole issue of control within organisations. I always emphasis that Cynefin was designed as a conflict resolution framework as much as for understanding decision making – all aspects of sense-making.

Blockchain - the Networked Ecosystem is the Business

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Based on the analysis of over 25 blockchain networks in various stages of production across multiple industries and geographies, the report recommends that a company’s blockchain journey should evolve along three distinct stages: in search of value, - establishing a minimum value ecosystem; getting to scale - creating value for an overall industry; and designing for new markets, - creating entirely new markets and business models.

Exploring synergies and interaction between the Cynefin Framework and Theory of Constraints

Many have been looking for answers to improve their performance and results, often jumping from one method to the next in search of “The Answer”. The TOC Logical Thinking Process is designed to solve any problem by using necessity and sufficiency logic to find the answer to 3 key questions: What to change? As our business contexts become increasingly complex, the success rate of large scale transformation efforts and projects are rapidly decreasing.

Content systems not content packages

That we should start designing our content into smaller chunks. Recognizing that LXPs are portals, not about creating experiences, we see the need for federated search. With chatbot interfaces, we can make it easier to automate the search and offering to deliver the right thing to the right person at the right time. design strategy technologyIn a conversation last week (ok, an engagement), the topic of content systems came up.

AI for Molecular Design - “The days of science relying on educated predictions - or guesses - to create new drugs and materials may become a thing of the past as artificial intelligence… will help the pharmaceutical industry identify and develop new drugs at a rapid pace.”. Let me briefly discuss the two AI-based technologies: AI for Molecular Design and AI that Can Argue and Instruct. AI-based Molecular Design. Molecular design is one such domain.

3 Simple Ways to Embed Learning in the Flow of Work

Add a search box in the applications learners use every day such as Salesforce or Slack and allow them to easily search your learning library. Xyleme Content Delivery Service (CDS) Search API allows you to embed a Search Box anywhere you want. People do so because of the perceived advantages gained by the use of these powerful tools, - e.g., efficiency, convenience, search capabilities. Surveillance and data systems are primarily designed for efficiency, profit and control. After decades of promise and hype, artificial intelligence is finally becoming one of the most important technologies of our era.

What Might Work Look Like in 2030?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

High : Large scale movements of people searching for better opportunities has become the norm; high-skilled workers flow to high-income enclaves, which are generally concentrated in large urban areas all around the world. In this scenario, both lower- and higher-skilled workers are on the move searching for better opportunities. Deep and growing inequalities dominate society, with large-scale movements of people within and across countries in search of opportunities.

Store content in a single repository so that it is easy to search, find, and reuse. While template is a four-letter word in some training organizations, organizations can gain huge efficiency by standardizing a rich library of screen layouts, interaction types, and content structures that learning and development teams can choose from when designing content. It’s very difficult to sit down and design the perfect solution in a vacuum.

Does God Exist?

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The complexity of our planet points to a deliberate Designer who not only created our universe, but sustains it today. I could argue that "DNA is precise information that programs the creation of a human being, and it was not designed , therefore, you can find precise information like this without someone intentionally constructing it." Suffice it to say that they are all of the form "God is the best explanation for x" where 'x' is existence, or causation, or design, etc.

Even though we're based in Silicon Valley and the heart of the tech industry, we're also careful to expand our search beyond the usual suspects. How much of the effort involves programs designed to do this and how much of the effort focuses on simply creating work environments that encourage workers to exercise their capabilities more actively in their day to day jobs?

For example, instead of creating a course simply by filling in boxes in predefined forms, I can think about the structure and format ahead of time and design it exactly how I want. I did a bit of searching around and determined that the overall structure is pretty common: - course - modules - an array of individual units of instruction - sections - an array of individual offerings of the course Like this: Figure 1.

Educational Research in Learning Technology

I think the key point here is to note that not everything is designed to increase test scores. Unfortunately, ‘the vast array of literature involving learning technology evaluation makes it challenging to acquire an accurate sense of the different aspects of learning that are evaluated, and the possible approaches that can be used to evaluate them’ (Lai & Bower, 2019). My contributions included this effort in learning design. I had designed OLe so that it used free-standing 'modules', and the IMS-LOM was perfect for this. They are now standard parts of LMSs, widely used in educational institutions (as a quick Google search will show), and invaluable to students for job applications, especially in creative fields. Today of course learning experience design means something totally different, but that's what it meant to me then.
