Remove 2019 Remove Complexity Remove Design Remove Patterns

Cynefin St Davids Day 2019 (2 of 5)

Dave Snowden

In the post I want to look at the different types of practice or knowledge use in each domain and explain why I changed ‘Emergent Practice’ to ‘Exaptive discovery” in the complex domain and added the stress condition to Novely in the Chaotic Domain. In the complex domain I used to talk about practice being emergent, that is to say it will not be fully known or knowable in advance; understood only with the benefit of hindsight there is little one can do in planning.

Dimensions of difficulty

Clark Quinn

So one of the dimensions is clearly complexity. Connecting and operating a simple device isn’t very complex. Addressing complex product complaints can be much more complex. Certainly we need more support if it’s more complex. For instance, flight errors are hopefully rare (the systems are robust), typically involve complex situations (the interactions between the systems mean engines affect flight controls), and have big consequences!

Liminal Cynefin & ‘control’

Dave Snowden

I always emphasis that Cynefin was designed as a conflict resolution framework as much as for understanding decision making – all aspects of sense-making. In the complex domain by contrast every exception needs to be visible fast at a senior level as they may represent opportunities. Something that MassSense was designed to handle on a near real time basis by shifting to the liminal aspect of the chaotic domain. .

solving problems together

Harold Jarche

The challenge for organizational design is to make it easy to move new problems into the knowable space. We can see the the narration of work in small bits that over time become a flow and later patterns emerge. Humans are very good at pattern recognition. Exception handling is complex work, which requires sensemaking, curiosity, and initiative. Today’s complex work may become tomorrow’s merely complicated or even simple work. Tools for LXD?

Clark Quinn

How do you use external resources to keep your design on track? We are pattern-matchers and meaning-makers, naturally making up explanations for things that happen. Our cognitive architecture is designed to do this; to help us adapt to the first-level world we evolved in. Complex ideas require external representation. We’re also bad at complex calculations. And, in particular, for design. You might be using templates for good design.

from enlightenment to entanglement

Harold Jarche

Linearity and Cartesian logic are not suitable for a connected and complex world. Our existing education and training systems are not designed for this task. We may discern some patterns from the past but our current challenges — as we shift to an electric-digital-networked age — are unique. But none of our institutions, including our markets, are designed for what is to come.

Narrative: paying the piper

Dave Snowden

Those reflections themselves arise from conversation is smaller groups and the whole thing is designed to keep ideas open for as long as possible: avoiding premature convergence. It is a complex facilitation technique and as such is designed to facilitate emergence rather than engineer an outcome.

Does God Exist?

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The complexity of our planet points to a deliberate Designer who not only created our universe, but sustains it today. This first argument points to the fact that the Earth is perfectly suited to life, and to the complexity of life on earth, and suggests that the only explanation for this is that God exists, created life on Earth, and continues to sustain it. When we look at random things, we see patterns in them. So it's no surprise that we recognize patterns.

range & inefficiency

of our research and education practices are designed for ‘kind’ environments where the rules and parameters are relatively clear. But the world, and most fields of human endeavour are complex, or ‘wicked’ “ In wicked domains, the rules of the game are often unclear or incomplete, there may or may not be repetitive patterns and they may not be obvious, and feedback is often delayed, inaccurate, or both.” Books Complexity Learning

The Social Network Is the Computer

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Our increasingly complex social interactions have been the critical factor in the exponential increase of human cranial capacity over the past few million years. “But today something is different.

Culture 6 of 7: Adjustments

Dave Snowden

An initiative is designed to start a journey rather than complete a goal. Given that an initiative is nearly always major the complex systems law of unintended consequences comes into play, it’s the only certainty. One of the simplest ways of reducing this danger is not to design or build a final structure but instead create sufficient structure that evolutionary processes can allow something more sustainable and resilient to emerge.

Educational Research in Learning Technology

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

philosophical behaviourism - this form of behaviourism allows that there are internal states but notes that they can only be described in terms of external behavior; phenomena such as intentions, desires and beliefs are described as dispositions the causes of which are complex and not reducible to these mental phenomena. I think the key point here is to note that not everything is designed to increase test scores. 2019) which caught my eye.

Ethical Codes and Learning Analytics

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

And, as he notes, ““There is one and only one social responsibility of business – to use it[s]resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition.” 2019) Ethical Codes As Standards of Conduct While ethics commonly applies to people in general, there is a specific class of ethics that applies to people by virtue of their membership in a professional group. 2019).

Workplace Learning Professionals Next Job - Management Consultant

Tony Karrer

This is very similar to what I discuss around Concept Workers and Work Literacy but they attack the change based on complexity – which is truly why concept workers are so important. Sensing patterns and helping to develop emergent work and learning practices. In 2019: A workplace learning odyssey Performance support will be built into the workflow and take the form of online tools, networks and coaching.
