Is the cloud hastening the demise of the LMS?

Dawn of Learning

Access to learning tools like collaboration spaces, wikis, discussions, and blogs was only available if you created proprietary packages and used the native LMS capabilities. LEARNING REACHES TO THE CLOUD. This is a big change, and a welcome one. Blackboard, for example, provides a rich set of tools; however, they only work on Blackboard.

Instructional Design Orthodoxy

Dawn of Learning

In my blog posts, I’ve been challenging instructional designers to embrace cultural shifts, and evolving technologies rather than brace against them.  Back then, the metaphor was a deck of cards and each card was a 640×480 screen’s worth of content. Due to the technical constraints it became a law that “pages must not scroll”.

Changing Role of the LMS

Dawn of Learning

Just do a quick search for “LMS is dead” and you’ll find many blog posts, articles, webinars and conference presentations discussing its demise. It seems that, for years, people have been writing obituaries for the corporate Learning Management System (LMS). Somehow that investment needs to be recouped. This is not atypical.

Five Myths of Social Learning

Dawn of Learning

While I could write an entire blog post on the reasons for this, I think Clark Quinn summarizes it quite nicely: “As work becomes more complex and the level of information explodes, speed-to-competence will depend on an organizations ability to allow learners to support themselves by tapping into the knowledge of others.” The Web 2.0
