Yammer

Yammer is like a private Twitter. Instead of Twitter’s question, “What are you doing?&# , Yammer asks “What are you working on?&#. Yammer also serves as a company directory in which every employee has a profile and as a knowledge base where past conversations can be easily accessed and referenced. Anyone in a company can start their Yammer network and begin inviting colleagues. The basic Yammer service is free.

Musing about Yammer and Sharepoint

Euen Semple

I know this will come as a shock to many of you - to hear me expressing an opinion about technology and on top of that recommending a Microsoft solution - but it occurred to me that the combination of Yammer and Sharepoint might just be the best thing for people trying to make social happen in their businesses. . In contrast Yammer and Sharepoint make sense for a couple of big reasons.

Business or Pleasure? - why not both: Yammer overstretches - and.

Martijn Linssen

why not both Home About Contact Saturday, 5 June 2010 Yammer overstretches - and breaks I have been using Yammer for almost a year now together with almost 8,000 colleagues from Capgemini , and its a wonderful way to share anything with your colleagues. It used to be a perfectly safe compound because of the technical limitation of email domain (meaning only people from e.g. @company.com could access the same Yammer network), but that changed March 1st 2010 and I blogged about that.

Yammer and why activity streams are a key foundation for integrated applications and organizations

Trends in the Living Networks

I caught up with some of the Yammer team this morning, including Chief Customer Officer David Obrand, while they are in town for the Yammer on Tour series. . I was particularly interested in talking with them about Yammer’s shift to activity streams. Yammer is now playing in the activity stream space, putting itself forward as a horizontal layer that ties together a wide variety of enterprise software systems.

Cooperation in the networked workplace

Harold Jarche

Yammer is one such platform, and Jared Spataro , at the Microsoft Office Division, has this to say about Yammer’s place in their business model: What should I do? Yammer or the SharePoint newsfeed?” ” My answer has been clear: Go Yammer! Yammer is our big bet for enterprise social, and we’re committed to making it the underlying social layer for all of our products. Yammer would be one tool to help with that engineering.

Social tools or tools that are social?

Harold Jarche

But even Microsoft is offering a separate collaboration platform, Yammer, in support of Office365. As Microsoft moves its services to the cloud and starts combining SharePoint, Yammer and Office 365, we still don’t really know what this all will look like by the end of 2013. “Employees that need to collaborate now have two options: a SharePoint Online site (which already number 18,000 and growing) or a Yammer group.

Yammer does a good job at this, but if you spend all your time on Yammer – chances are you are not getting work done. Unless your job is to increase Yammer adoption. Actually, I mean “More on Facebook,” but as I was once accused of using fancy headlines to draw clicks (to this site with no advertising), I thought I would play the part and see if that behavior makes any difference. Tongue is firmly encheeked. Also, this isn’t about Facebook at all.

Ridiculous research findings on informal learning

Jay Cross

It’s hard to imagine informal learning not going along for the ride when a company embraces Jive or Chatter or Yammer or Socialcast or similar networking environments. An analyst reports that her company’s research finds that only 30% of U.S. companies spent money on informal learning tools or services last year. Of those, big companies spent $16,000 on average; little ones spent $5600. What an astounding finding!

More and more organisations are beginning to adopt enterprise social networking technologies (like Yammer) more formally as business tools, so there is a growing need for a dedicated resource to manage and support this activity – not technically but in human terms. For some time now I’ve sensed a split in the learning profession in terms of recognising the value and importance of self-managed learning as it takes place in the flow of daily work.

These might be proprietary systems like Jive , Podio , Yammer , Socialcast , or open source software, like WordPress / Buddypress or Elgg. Social technologies now play a big part in everything we do, and it is quite clear that many knowledge workers use a variety of social tools and networks not only to help them get work done, but also to learn efficiently while on the job.
