Yammer is like a private Twitter. Instead of Twitter’s question, “What are you doing?&# , Yammer asks “What are you working on?&#. Yammer also serves as a company directory in which every employee has a profile and as a knowledge base where past conversations can be easily accessed and referenced. Anyone in a company can start their Yammer network and begin inviting colleagues. The basic Yammer service is free.

Shortly after Forrester announced that Deloitte Australia’s Yammer network had won its 2011 Forrester Groundswell award in the category of Collaboration Systems. Half of their 5,000 staff are on Yammer, with 150 conversations a day.

Deloitte’s success with enterprise micro-blog Yammer led to Yammer asking Deloitte if they could create a case study. In that process Deloitte correlated Yammer usage with staff information. One discovery was that staff turnover of active Yammer users was 2%, substantially below the company average. Deloitte also use Yammer as inputs to organizational network analysis , allowing them to identify the network hubs and knowledge brokers across the firm.

One story is a teacher who had a new student who knew one word of English, who went to Yammer to ask for help and got significant useful advice from the network.
