Last week I presented a session at ASTD TechKnowledge entitled eLearning 2.0 - Applications and Implications. It could just as easily have been called Web 2.0 There were about 7 examples mentioned including Intuit using a Wiki-like system for customers to ask questions/get advice around taxes, using a group blog with students prior to a formal learning event, the US Army's use of collaboration tools to share best practices in Iraq, and several others. I first saw Andrew McAffee's post on uses of Web 2.0 where he talks about some of the issues with blogs within the enterprise and ends with: Wikis seem to have less baggage attached to them and that might partially (and only partially) explain their recent rise in use within the enterprise. The first uses of Wikis is as an easier content management system that houses reference material. It's just a really easy way for a group of people to put up web pages.

Web 2.0 Tools, Networks and Community (Individuals vs. Collective)

This is an interesting piece that made me think about the new landscape created by Web 2.0 Traditional online community mechanisms (email lists, groups) are joined by a wide variety of publishing mechanisms (blogs, social bookmarking, wikis, flickr, etc.) What's really interesting to me is that I'm finding in a web 2.0 Other examples are closed lists, e.g., Web 2.0 Workgroup and Enterprise Irregulars or open lists kept on Wikis.

When I was at University of Manitoba, we tried to get a sense of what faculty were doing with technology in their courses, particularly with what was then called web 2.0 The response was significant – we found faculty and TAs using wikis, blogs, lecture capture tools, podcasts, clickers, second life, and mobiles for teaching. There is more activity in online learning (or, at minimum blended learning) in higher education than most universities realize.
