Power Searching with Google

Jay Cross

Search is like driving a car. Google just opened enrollment for an online course, Power Searching with Google. I signed up for several reasons: I’m insanely curious and search the web many times a day. I’ve learned a number of tips and tricks: word order matters; capitalization doesn’t matter; filter image searches by color; use Command-F to pop up a text search of a page. I’ll report back here after a few more Classes.

“In a world where everyone can search and has apps, is a web portal relevant?,” Now people arrive through search. Clear lines of reporting up to the senior management. The lines of reporting also reach all the way to the devs. Someone has a general idea, but not informed enough to search. Sarah Crane , Dir., Federal Citizen Information Center, GSA., is going to talk about USA.gov.

The evolution of search will refine the spectrum of quality in media

Trends in the Living Networks

Search is not getting better, or it certainly seems that way. In the evolutionary battle between search engines and search engine marketers, the search engines are not keeping ahead, and crap content is finding its way into the top of search results. This makes search users unhappy, opens the way for alternatives to the dominant player in the Western world, AKA Google. In the context of search, if people find what they are looking for, it is high quality.

Pew recently reported that advertising revenue rebounded in 2010 for all forms of media, except newspapers. The intuition common to such proposals is that advertising revenues can no longer be relied on to fund serious reporting. When a paper fires reporters or closes outright, it further weakens that fabric. * * *. But even in their worst days, newspapers supported the minority of journalists reporting actual news, for the minority of citizens who cared. Clay Shirky.
