How not to do a press release

George Siemens

From the press release, it really looks like Elluminate has been purchased (I’m less interested in what it looks like for Wimba – I haven’t used their products for years I just received an email saying that Blackboard, Wimba, and Elluminate were forming some type of union. The message is practically useless – did BB buy Elluminate? Did they just decide to work on integration?

Press Release Spam (an interlude)

Mind Hacks

One of the reasons I get so much PR spam is because people like Vocus PR are selling my email address, to publishers and University Press offices, who then send me email about things I’m not interested in. Sorry to interrupt your normal psych/neuro programming, but this is just a short note to say that I have retired the tom@mindhacks.com email address. If you wish to contact me or Vaughan, please tweet us (details in rightbar).

Standing up for trivia

Euen Semple

How can I trust you if all you do is 140 character press releases? It is so easy to sneer. Easy to sneer at newbies. Easy to sneer at other people''s "rubbish". Easy to sneer at what other people do with social media. I try not to. One person''s trivia is someone else''s context.

Where Are the Girls? Working, Stupid

Nine Shift

The press release, from the Pittsburgh Aviation Institute - - which trains aviation mechanics, says that there is a huge retirement now of aviation mechanics and the solution (surprise) is filling the traditional male occupation with females. . So I get this email this week with the subject line, "Where are the Girls?" .

MOOCs: Scaling Corporate Learning

George Siemens

I catch press releases and partnership announcements, but the conversation is too fragmented to provide a sense of lessons being learned and various implementation model. While MOOCs have gained the interest and attention of higher education, they have failed to make much of an impact on corporate learning. That is starting to change. Over the past year, organizations such as Google, GE, Cisco, McAfee, Bank of America, AXA, and AT&T have started to experiment with MOOCs.

Signposts for the week ending 1/21/11

Adaptive Path

The most amazing press release ever written is, really, the most amazing press release ever written! Results of a 1967 study on eye-tracking seems to still be valid: we look at what we’re told to. This Master’s Thesis by Christian Behrens, “ The Form of Facts and Figures &# deserves to be a printed book. Great collection of information visualization patterns.

My Next Role Is …

Dan Pontefract

There is plenty more to share and discover on the TTO official website , or with the press release but the highlights are as follows: An organizational culture change service provider offering assessment, consulting and learning services.

Whitehouse.gov: Give your bloggers’ names!

David Weinberger

The Whitehouse.gov blog continues to improve, by which I mean it’s getting less like the glass-topped version of White House press releases. The White House bloggers seem quite aware that a press release isn’t a post and are trying to create a difference between the two. It’s not much and it’s still directly tied to the President’s remarks, but that paragraph doesn’t read like a press release or like a speech.

Clearly true because he says so in a priceless TV interview and the university backed it up in a hard hitting press release. Open Learning Analytics

George Siemens

See here for press release and project scope. The future of systems such as business, government, and education will be data centric. Historically, humanity has made sense of the world through discourse, dialogue, artifacts, myth, story, and metaphor. While those sensemaking approaches won’t disappear, they will be augmented by data and analytics. Educators often find analytics frustrating. After all, how can you analyze the softer aspects of learning?
