Knowledge artisans choose their tools

Harold Jarche

In the unattained summit of social business , Ton Zylstra writes: So we talked about how corporate systems might integrate social media tools into sharepoint and ERP-software, but not about the notion that it is quickly becoming ridiculous that IT departments should be prescribing what tools professionals should use at all, and not just stick to managing and securing the data flowing through those tools. How can you be a knowledge worker if you’re not allowed to pick your own tools?

The open source WordPress software is also available to download and install on company servers. Dropbox recognizesthat this file synchronization and file haring is a key functionality for business, but also realises that security is a big issue for many, so offers “bank grade security” for corporate teams. The Future of Learning Management Systems: Development, Innovation and Change

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

First there was the open source movement (Moodle and Sakai). Another trend - maybe not the way it should be, but it’s where the data point: open source peaked in 2013 at about 34% and since then it has begun to drop. It’s funny with all the talk about open education, the licensing model of the LMS is not going in that direction. Comment: some IT people focus on security and privacy.

Meaning that’s generally how long any new world-changing development effort spends in the quiet shadows before it breaks out into the open and starts taking off. (If I’ve also seen VRM from the start as fundamentally an open source effort, not a commercial one. I also saw open source tools, with their high use-value, having enormous leverage into sale-value for any company selling products or services based on those open tools.

The biggest issue is that e-learning programs inevitably tend to grow in the numbers of courses, complexity of interactivity, evolutionary needs (such as the importation of third-party courses), and ‘nice to have’ needs, such as podcasts, video, blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, standards conformance, linking to a human resources information system, and more.
