[nextweb] The Open Source Bank of Brewster

David Weinberger

Brewster wants to show us how to build on free and open software. Stahlman tried to keep the open code feature-compatible, but it couldn’t be done. Open Source doesn’t work well there. They give away their product, and they use a community structure under 501c(3) so that it can’t be bought. So, can we build a free and open ecosystem that work better than the current one? I’m at the Next Web conference in Amsterdam.

Open Source LMS

Tony Karrer

Because of their very limited budget, I suggested they dive into more depth looking at open source LMS products. To help get that started, I looked at eLearning Learning and found some pretty good sources around LMS / Open Source and Learning Management System / Open Source.

The Productivity Puzzle

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Economic growth has two main components, productivity growth and the growth of the labor force. I ncreasing productivity is thus more crucial than ever to promote economic growth. But, in the US and other advanced economies, productivity growth has significantly slowed down over the past few decades. From 1987 to 2004 US labor productivity grew at a 2.1% Since 2011, the productivity rate has further declined to 0.6%. . US labor productivity grew at only 1.5%

Reflections on Innovation, Productivity and Job Creation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

I have also been thinking a lot about the impact of these innovations on the productivity of the service sector of the economy in general, and in particular, on the kinds of jobs that we can expect to be created over the next decades to replace those jobs that might decline or disappear as a result of such productivity improvements. Although there are numerous technological innovations that have improved the productivity of services over the past century (e.g.,

User-Based Free Innovation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Free innovation is a tightly constrained subset of commons-based peer production , - also known as open, collaborative innovation. How can individuals justify developing a product or service which is freely made available to anyone while no one pays for their labor?

The Current State of Open Innovation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

In January, UC Berkeley professor Henry Chesbrough published Open Innovation Results : Going Beyond the Hype and Getting Down to Business, his fourth book on innovation in the last two decades. He’s credited with coining the term open innovation in his 2003 book of the same title. Open innovation is the antithesis of the vertically integrated, closed innovation approach followed by industrial R&D labs through much of the 20th century. Open services innovation.

a global human sensemaking platform

Harold Jarche

“First, individuals are empowered to become co-creators, co-producers, and co-distributors of information for the benefit of their communities … Second, the accessibility of these knowledge products enables innovation. The release of patents under an open license means that inventors and manufacturers can build needed solutions without the worry of a lawsuit. The pandemic response has shown the benefits of a commons-based model of knowledge production and sharing.”

Getting Through Highly Uncertain Times - Some Lessons Learned

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

In the 1980s, rapid advances in microprocessors and related technologies opened the door for less expensive, PC- and UNIX-based client-server solutions. What does it take to get through highly uncertain times, like the ones we’re in the middle of as we confront the Covid-19 pandemic?

The Blockchain and Open Innovation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Then in the 1990s, the open Internet protocol, - TCP/IP , - was widely embraced by the general IT marketplace, making it possible to interconnect systems and applications from any vendors. At the same time, the Web’s open set of standards, - HTML , HTTP , URLs , - and the easy-to-use, graphical Mosaic web browser , - enabled any PC connected to the Internet to access information on any web server anywhere in the world.

We show that over the past 40 years, structural change within the labor market has revealed itself during downturns and recoveries. Post-Pandemic, Is the World Likely to Become Significantly Less Flat?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Thomas Friedman ’s The World is Flat became an international best-seller in 2005 by nicely explaining what this new golden age of globalization was all about, including the key forces that contributed to flattening the world, - from the explosive growth of the Internet, open source software and related technologies; to the rise of outsourcing, offshoring and global supply chains.

Beyond GDP - Measuring Value in a Service-oriented, Information-based, Digital Economy

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the basic measure of a country’s overall economic output based on the market value of all the goods and services the country produces. GDP is essentially a measure of production. While suitable when economies were dominated by the production of physical goods, GDP does not adequately capture the growing share of services and the production of increasingly complex solutions that characterize advanced economies.

Open as in commons, not garden

Harold Jarche

I have been a proponent of the open web and open source software for the past decade and more. As they say on the web, if you’re not paying for it, you are the product. I will also look for good platforms that are either open source, like wordpress.org , which powers this site, or services that charge a fee and cater to their customers. This site will remain ad free and open access, not residing on some commercial third-party hosted platform.

Cloud Computing and the Supply Chain of Services

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The strategy, which is spreading despite added costs and headaches, in part reflects a shifting view of the cloud from a more efficient, cost-cutting tool, to a source of business innovation and new revenue, chief information officers and industry analysts say.”. Some companies will choose to become service providers themselves, by selling their business services, - which they previously used only internally, - to the general market, thus developing new revenue sources.

Learning as Artifact Creation

George Siemens

Yet, change is happening, often under the radar of enthusiasts because it’s harder to sell a technology product or draw clicks to a website when being nuanced and contextual. If I lecture on the development of open learning and open source technologies, I’m presenting my voice, my priorities, my values.

The Promise and Current State of Blockchain

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The first major promise of blockchain technologies is to help us enhance the security of Internet transactions and data, by developing a blockchain fabric layer with the required standard services for secure communication, storage and data access, along with open source software implementations of these standard services which all blockchain pl a tforms and applications would support. Key here is the all-important role of open standards.

Cloud Computing and Open Architectures

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Earlier this month IBM announced that all its cloud services and software will be based on open standards and an open cloud architecture. Standards and open source software are necessary to help cloud computing achieve the kind of market success enjoyed by the Web, e-mail and other widely used Internet-based services. Unlike the previous two models, cloud computing is totally centered around the Internet and related open architectures.
