Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) for Managing Course Assets

Tony Karrer

They have Articulate courses, classroom courses, SharePoint sites, etc. And they currently manage all of this using what I’ve seen at a lot of companies: network drives, naming conventions, some SharePoint. In Digital Asset Management – LCMS, ECM and SharePoint , I talk to how ECM (Enterprise Content Management) solutions might be a better fit for parts of this. But I’ve seen organizations cobble together solutions using SharePoint more than I’ve seen LCMS solutions.

Social tools or tools that are social?

Harold Jarche

They might all be called ‘social networks’, but Facebook is very different from Twitter, which is very different from Instagram, which is very different from Foursquare. Sharepoint supports people who are collaborating, focused on specific objectives, and sharing the same documents.

SharePoint is many things, but it misses the critical element of social media which is networked connection between people and ideas, easy discoverability, makes visible and allows people to act on weak ties, and support for other network-like interactions rather than closed group performance.

Digital Asset Management – LCMS, ECM and SharePoint

Tony Karrer

I'm going to also address the broader concept he raises about Work Networking. Living near Hollywood and the many different production companies and studios, I've talked to and worked on several projects that were digital asset management systems. I have heard a common lament that large files cause a little bit of an issue in that many IT departments limit network storage because of the need to provide robust back-ups and retention.

For instance, there is a big difference between Sharepoint and Facebook, though both enable some kind of collaboration. Open networking environments lack the tools needed for project work while enterprise collaboration systems lack openness and flexibility.

And I'm certainly seeing a lot of SharePoint. An example of that is the adoption of Distributed Content Editing via an agreed to technology such as Wiki, Shared SharePoint Documents, Google Docs, etc. There is a network effect with the adoption of discussion groups.

eLearning Portal Integration

Tony Karrer

But this only scratches the surface of what it means to integrate the Learning Management System (LMS) into the systems that people use day-to-day in an enterprise. My gut says these tools are going to be separate from the LMS, e.g., SharePoint. Previously it took users up to 15 clicks to go from system access to content launch. I applaud SumTotal for recognizing that these tools exist in a network of other systems.

If I were in charge of a retailer, for example, I’d want an ERP-ish system that my customer service reps used to take orders from customers, then send them to the warehouse for fulfillment and also to accounts payable.
