Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger

Tony Karrer

I've not seen a lot about Mzinga in the eLearning world, but it represents something pretty interesting. Mzinga is a merger of KnowledgePlanet (an LMS provider and also the maker of the eLearning simulation tool - Firefly) and Shared Insights - a community / business social networking software company. The top execs at Mzinga are not the top execs from KnowledgePlanet. I wonder if mzinga does?

LMS and Social Learning

Tony Karrer

Mzinga seems to have jumped out early with a strong social platform that also has an LMS capability. Dave Wilkins from Mzinga talks about the two models of social learning as depicted by the diagram on the right.

There are some very cool new features especially our hot list feature coming out soon on the eLearning Learning Content Community. The site is beginning to take into account social signals. In other words, we are using what is happening: with the content out in the network on the eLearning Learning searches that land on us and that occur on the site, and various other kinds of behaviors.

Social Media Goals

Clark Quinn

Mzinga is clearly targeted at the learning space, being integrated with an LMS. Yet, for a learning group, Mzinga’s integration of formal and informal learning is also plausible. I spent yesterday touring the Web 2.0 expo (part of the time with fellow miscreant Jay Cross ), and it led me to think a bit more about social media tools and approaches.

Significance

Clark Quinn

In the CLT, Dave Wilkins of Mzinga talked about the ‘Amazon’ model of tools around a learning resource (as a formal learning model) and the community model of tools embedded in a community. Sorry for the dearth of postings, but what with last week’s DevLearn conference and this week’s (free, online) Corporate Learning Trends (CLT) conference, and background kitchen remodel, client work, etc, I’ve been wiped out by the end of every day.

Formal learning & social networking

Clark Quinn

I’m still not convinced there’s an LMS that integrates social networking tools in a way that makes a smooth segue from formal to informal, though I know Mzinga’s making a stab at it. After hearing Mark Oehlert and Brent Schlenker do such a great job on eLearning 2.0 at the Guild’s Summer Seminar, I got my own chance to talk about it to a corporate group, but with a twist. Much of elearning 2.0

Looking Back at 2007

Tony Karrer

However, there's Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger announcement around Mzinga. In December 2006, I posted my challenges and predictions for 2007. I thought it would be worth looking back at what I said in this post to see how I did for the year. Shortly, I'll be responding to this month's Big Question with my Predictions for Learning in 2008. Biggest challenges for 2007?
