Questions from and for the Digital Public Library of America workshop

David Weinberger

I got to attend the Digital Public Library of America ‘s first workshop yesterday. Something like: To bring the benefits of public libraries to every American. For example, the session opened with a discussion of public versus research libraries (with the “versus&# thrown into immediate question). That’s the approach taken by the European online library, Europeana. Maybe a library is not the best transformative model. The DPLA wiki is here

O failure, where is thy sting?

David Weinberger

The Twitter hashtag #FailShare is accumulating instances of failed library projects, so that we can learn from them, and also, I imagine, to take the sting out of failure (on the grounds that sting-y failure makes for stingy ideas). And, a brand new wiki page has gone up on the same topic.

Have social networks replaced groups?

David Weinberger

But his comment, plus a discussion yesterday with Andrew Preater , a library technologist at the Imperial College of London, made me think how little progress we’ve in fact made in supporting groups on the Net. For example, Clay’s post from 2003 marvels at a “broadband conversation” in which the participants communicated simultaneously by conference call, through a wiki, and through a chat, each from a different source.

Ward invented the wiki. Ward’s original wiki was geeky beyond belief. I mentioned that ten years ago, my glossary defined wiki as “a way to stop a conversation.&# So I asked Ward how he felt about today’s spiffed-up, user-friendly wikis.

For example, at CAWW we take long conversation threads in Socialcast, curate them, and post edited text and graphics to a wiki. Not all conversations get this treatment but we try to create accessible libraries of knowledge that we can use later to make better decisions.

He told me that they used to ship truck loads of cards to libraries every day. It was quite a while ago when libraries began to put signs on card catalogs telling patrons that they are no longer updating them. I was VERY happy to see that Dave included a wiki, something I was begging for when he showed me his prototypes. The Sueetie feature set grows with the development of each new Sueetie site, as Sueetie developers share their application code in a common Sueetie code library.
