Most people are too busy managing in the industrial/information age workplace and have no slack to try to learn how work in the network age. I strongly suggest that the first step of starting to work out loud, as part of personal knowledge management, has to be as simple as possible.

I became interested in knowledge management (KM) as I was introduced to it in the mid 1990’s while practising instructional systems design (ISD) and human performance technology (HPT) in the military. In the late 1990’s knowledge management was part of our solution suite at the Centre for Learning Technologies ( CLT via The Wayback Machine). I became a consumer and simultaneously a sharer of online knowledge.

Effective knowledge sharing is what many organizations do not do well, or as Lew Platt past-CEO of Hewlett-Packard said, “if only HP knew what HP knows, we would be three times more productive. That’s the key benefit of personal knowledge management, in my opinion. If each person can better manage knowledge creation and capture, then it becomes easier to share it. I also make available information and perhaps knowledge that is useful to others.

Stuart Henshall had asked on Twitter about ideas for posts. There are also several studies of knowledge worker practices that suggest that a lot of what is effective is quite personal. It's always interesting to hear the perspective of someone with a background in Knowledge Management discussing these things. How can the organization capture the knowledge, learning, etc.?
