Institutional Memory and Knowledge Management

Harold Jarche

The main themes are: Memories are captured as knowledge artifacts, each limited by what it can convey, depending on its nature and the knowledge of recipient. Knowledge management can provide a structure to capture institutional memory, but it requires more than one approach. Complex work, which is growing in importance in networked organizations, requires the sharing of implicit knowledge and this presents certain challenges. complexity PKM Work

Knowledge Management for Decision Memories

Harold Jarche

As Brian Gongol notes: If a capital project has an expected service life of 20 to 30 years, it’s entirely possible that people working in an institution in their 20s will be middle or upper-level managers in the same institution by the time the project has to be replaced or upgraded. This is Big Knowledge Management , leveraging the power of enterprise software platforms to store decision, process, and event memories. An Organizational Knowledge Sharing Framework.

Becoming personal knowledge managers

Harold Jarche

Tweet Nick Milton highlights an overview of knowledge management (KM) from Susan Camarena , CKO at the Federal Transit Authority, which includes: How do we implement KM? This is the root of personal knowledge management (PKM). The way we become better knowledge managers ourselves is through practice because information is not enough, we need to learn from experience. The only knowledge that can be managed is our own.

From Learning Management to Personal Knowledge Management

Jane Hart

But in fact it has been clear for some time that many individuals are already taking responsibility for not only acquiring new knowledge and skills but for a wide range of activities for their continuous learning and professional development. Acquiring new knowledge and skills – e.g. in webinars, online workshops, MOOCs, and through videos and screencasts, etc. Here’s a short presentation by Harold Jarche that explains PKM and his Seek-Sense-Share PKM framework.

Teach a man to fish… PKM: Figuring out what’s important to you, how to find it, how to keep up with it, how to make sense of it, how to recall it when you need it anew, and how to share it with others — this is ground zero for mining the riches of the web. Bookstore shelves overflow with books on blogging , but I’ve yet to see one on PKM. Harold Jarche has written some great posts about PKM. How do you organize your PKM?

personal knowledge management & wisdom

Harold Jarche

PKM consists of practical methods for making sense of the increasing digital information flows around us. And while there are different ways to think of knowledge – processed, procedural, propositional – this model I think adheres to a more basic view. Here are some images from a presentation on PKM I will be giving at our local university tomorrow and including in a workshop next week. People use their knowledge to make sense of data and information.

PKM Roles

Harold Jarche

I like to frame personal knowledge management as a combination of seeking knowledge, making sense of it, and sharing it with others. This simple model has worked well in explaining the main concepts of PKM and helping others to individually construct a set of processes to make sense of the world and work more effectively. Over 10 years ago Patrick Lambe wrote a very good guide on the various roles one can have in PKM.

It has been over 10 years that I have examined, practiced, and developed models for personal knowledge management/mastery. PKM shifts responsibility. I started down the path of personal knowledge mastery in 2004, inspired by Dave Pollard , Denham Gray , and others. “To To a great extend PKM [personal knowledge management] is about shifting responsibility for learning and knowledge sharing from a company to individuals and this is the greatest challenge for both sides.

PKM in Action. Part 2

Harold Jarche

In PKM in Action Part 1 I gave a few examples of how people practice personal knowledge mastery. A good way of looking at PKM is as a method to improve serendipity, or fortuitous chance encounters. Anne Adrian shared her journey of going online to seek, make sense, and to share knowledge. Instead serendipity has surprised me with energy, thoughts, knowledge, ideas, concepts, realizations, experiences, and relationships.”

Using a Seek-Sense-Share framework (à la personal knowledge management), pick one or more web platforms on which to practise critical thinking. In my opinion, the core of PKM is 2) sensing, though 1) active observation is necessary to feed sense-making processes and 3) sharing with others creates better feedback loops. Tweet Here are four main processes that can be used in developing critical thinking skills using web tools (click image to enlarge).

PKM Workshops

Harold Jarche

The final scheduled personal knowledge management workshop finishes this weekend. Stephen Dale also gave his take on PKM. Here is a great explanation from Jack Vinson , who shared his years of KM experience during the workshop: Personal knowledge management is the idea that individuals have to be responsible for managing to get things done. PKM is about getting things done.

Absorbing complexity with PKM

Harold Jarche

One of the most spectacular possibilities that social technologies offer is that our individual creativity and knowledge is exponentially expanded by connecting to our personal networks – both within and outside organisational boundaries. The process of seeking out people and information sources, making sense of them by taking some action, and then sharing with others to confirm or accelerate our knowledge, are those activities from which we can build our knowledge.

PKM and MOOC

Harold Jarche

If we think of the MOOC as a vehicle for shared understanding, and not content delivery, it becomes the collective equivalent to personal knowledge management. In the complex domain , combining PKM with more structure for social learning, using the MOOC format, can be an important addition to how workplace learning is supported. My focus on PKM developed after an initial personal need and then increased when I saw how personal knowledge management could help others. PKM in 2013

Harold Jarche

“The basic unit of social business technology is personal knowledge management, not collaborative workspaces.” Personal knowledge management (PKM) is a set of processes, individually constructed, to help each of us make sense of our world and work more effectively. But what we loosely call knowledge, using terms like knowledge-sharing or knowledge capture, is often just an approximation. ” Knowledge.

PKM as pre-curation

Harold Jarche

The most important part of personal knowledge management (PKM), in my opinion, is the need for active sense-making. One strength of PKM is the “manual” nature of sense-making activities. Sense-making, or placing information into context, is where the real personal value of PKM lies. The knowledge gained from PKM is an emergent property of all its activities. Merely tagging an article does not create knowledge. PKM SocialLearning

Harold Jarche

One way to practice these skills would be to promote personal knowledge management (PKM) in the workplace. In an organization where everyone is practising PKM, the chances for more connections increases. Harold Jarche

A few weeks ago I asked my extended online network, “ What do you think is the biggest fear/need/barrier when it comes to adopting personal knowledge management (PKM) as a practice? ” Finding someone to talk to about PKM was a common response, as was the observation that management’s perception is often that not everyone has the same level of ability to do PKM sufficiently well.
