5 Use Cases for a Corporate YouTube in Organizations

Dan Pontefract

Of course collaboration platforms like Jive or Confluence come with it as well. I’m not talking about professional learning videos you pay for from external vendors which you then might upload to the system.

knowledge-sharing, post-technology

Harold Jarche

The recent announcement of Jive’s purchase shows that this field is consolidating with a few large players dominating. For example, Jive sells for $5 – $16 per seat, while Facebook’s Workplace is $1 – $3 per seat, with no lock-in.

So The LMS Is Dead: Collaboration-Talent Convergence is Next

Dan Pontefract

Talent Management versus Collaboration Systems. Now that the Standalone LMS domino is falling, we can now turn our attention to the looming next battle which, in my opinion, will be between Talent Management Systems and Collaboration Systems.

Separating advertising’s wheat and chaff

Doc Searls

Since it’s obvious that the tracking-based advertising business won’t label its ads except with fatuous jive like the Ad Choices button, somebody on the wheat side of the business should start labeling their ads so we — and our browsers — know what’s not tracking based.

‘Social Business’ is Past Retirement Age

Andy McAfee

The single biggest group of books and articles we read, though, had to do with business as a social system. So here’s my response: If you’re saying that people are important, that businesses are inherently social systems and that social dynamics matter for performance, your insight is about 80 years old. I’ve received free use of cloud-based software from Jive and Socialtext.

What can people do with data that companies alone can’t?

Doc Searls

And, if we shared that data back, it would also help media with subscription systems to improve those as well. This is why today’s “Big Data” jive, coming entirely from big companies selling to other big companies, sounds very much like the mainframe business in 1980 and the networking business in 1990.

Reframing the news

Doc Searls

Most of all, Twitter is somebody else’s system. The entire system is shaped by its boundaries, the ridges and plateaus farthest upstream. Every one of those intermediary systems cries out for improvement or replacement, both of which will be happen naturally if they feel the by the gravitational pull of rivers at central journalistic institutions such as the Times and the BBC. ” This kind of jive is the sound an industry makes when it’s talking to itself.

Thinking outside the pipes

Doc Searls

It’s just business jive for stuff that floats subscription and advertising revenue online. This by far is the most serious threat to sharing information on the Net, because it undermines and sidelines the Net’s heterogeneous and distributed system for supporting everybody and everything, and biases the whole thing to favor a few vertically-integrated ‘content’ industries.

The Other 90% of Learning

Chatter, Jive, Socialcast, Yammer, Podio, and other social networking systems simplify listening in and joining purposeful conversations. Serving enterprise customers. This appears in the August 2012 CLO magazine. They changed the title on me.). Knowledge workers learn three to four times as much from experience as from interaction with bosses, coaches, and mentors. They learn about twice as much from those conversations compared to structured courses and programs.

Making Sense of the World

My research methods — my personal knowledge management system, if you will — are also different from yesteryear’s. Among the streams that feed this phase of sense-making are: Social networks, primarily private networks such as Socialcast, Google Groups, or Jive.

Standalone LMS is Still Dead (rebutting & agreeing w/ Dave Wilkins)

Dan Pontefract

If not, how can we take the formal learning features of an/the LMS, and federate with existing corporate systems (to create a learning, content, collaboration ecosystem panacea). Again, what we’ve created is a seamless, federated workflow system for the employee.

Lotus Notes isn’t as hot a product as it used to be

David Weinberger

Today, we’d call it a collaboration tool or a corporate social-media tool, and it would be web-based and standards-compliant, like Yammer, Jive, and Huddle. Notes has hung on primarily as an email tool, not living up to its promise as an enterprise collaboration system. But eventually Web clients scaled up in power, functionality, and robustness…enabling systems far beyond what the old proprietary backend systems could manage.

Automated Assumption Fail (#AAF)

Doc Searls

And, while I’m the one doing most (but not all) of the listening on my many browsers, computers and hand-held devices, in our house I’m just one listener among many indulging our Sonos system. Today’s prevailing jive about both are sure signs that they’ll become just as personal as computing and networking. So I just got this email from Pandora: This is an #AAF: an Automated Assumption Fail.

The good news is that it’s free, and it has a plethora of other educators helping to improve the system (part LMS, part CMS, part VLE). I wouldn’t hesitate to contact some of the Corporate collaboration platform players (Saba, SkillSoft, Jive, Liferay, Atlassian, Microsoft, etc.)

A Window Into The Org

Dan Pontefract

Imagine if you will, in the learning space specifically, that every time a new eLearning course was developed, that a new portal, system or application was also introduced where the employee had to log into to access the actual course. Think about Microsoft Sharepoint (particularly the 2010 release), Jive , Drupal , Blogtronix , Telligent , amongst many others as that window. Other systems, be it SAP/Oracle/Lawson ERP, any LMS, various Knowledge Management Systems, even other Web 2.0

Web 2.0 Applications in Learning

Tony Karrer

There were about 7 examples mentioned including Intuit using a Wiki-like system for customers to ask questions/get advice around taxes, using a group blog with students prior to a formal learning event, the US Army's use of collaboration tools to share best practices in Iraq, and several others. This is something that gets discussed as emergent: see Emergent Knowledge Management , Direction of eLearning - Emergence or Big System , and Future Platforms for eLearning.

An opportunity for the AP

Doc Searls

Reading the AP’s paranoid jive brings to mind Jim Clark on stage at the first (only?) The process of giving credit where due we call ascribenation , and the system by which readers (or listeners, or viewers) choose to pay for it we call EmanciPay. The system that began when the AP was formed in 1846 isn’t going to go away, but it will have to adapt. It helps to recognize that the Associated Press is exactly what its name denotes: an association of presses.

Evening Beer Notes

Doc Searls

The road radio traveled to hell (where its commercial corner has rotting for the last thirty years or so) was paved with jive like Federated is talking in that pitch. FWIW, I’ve always been vexed by Yahoo’s ID system. I’m bummed that I’m drinking a beer on the deck here in Santa Barbara while Dave is in Cambridge. Would have enjoyed having coffee with him this morning.

Beyond caveat emptor

Doc Searls

Either the untrustworthy recipient develops a reputation for indescretion and is cut off, or the entire system would have to preclude any privacy at all. Putting in that RDFa would be trivial for a CRM system. Or even for a CMS (content management system).

Futures of the Internet

Doc Searls

Much text here has been changed to.html from.pdf and.doc forms, and extracting all the old formatting jive has been kind of arduous. The other is that advertising is a system of guesswork, which by nature makes it both speculative and inefficient. Internet-based applications like Google Docs and applications run from smartphones will have some functionality, but the most innovative and important applications will run on (and spring from) a PC operating system.
