RSS and the Browser As Social Network

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Centralized social networks work much better for user tracking and link promotion. Services like Patreon and Substack are enabling content producers to stay outside social networks and directly reach (and monetize) readers.

Social networked learning: research seminar

George Siemens

In June, 2010, Terry Anderson and I, along with TEKRI researchers and a few visiting guests, hosted a doctoral research seminar on social networked learning. The event offered a great opportunity for sharing research and engaging in discussions around the future role of social networked learning. This year, we (TEKRI: Terry Anderson, Jon Dron, and I) are excited to announce the second version of this research seminar: Social Networks and Learning 2011.

What Universities Must Learn About Social Networks

Jay Cross

What Universities Must Learning About Social Networks. Increasingly, businesses are looking to more social approaches to employee learning and development. THE ISSUE IS NOT whether you are going to become a socially networked university but how soon. Businesses are being transformed into social businesses. Social Networking Gets Serious – #prayforjapan

Luis Suarez

One of the main inhibitors with regards to a successful adoption of social software within the enterprise that I keep bumping into from fellow knowledge workers and, specially, their managers!, is that perception that social networking, you know, “things&# like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like are just for fun. Social spaces where you goof off at work and get away with it, because they are all hyped and everything, and everyone needs to be there.

Enterprise Social Networking Tips by Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez

Over the course of the last few years there has been one particular aspect of social networking for business that I still haven’t come to terms with throughout all of that time. Specially, if you look into the rather significant impact it’s having across the board in multiple social networking tools. Perhaps the most vocal one being one of my favourite social networking tools: Google Plus.

Industrialisation of Social Networking for the Enterprise

Or, to put it in other words, automation of your social networking presence. Have we forgotten that with social networking for business we are all in it for the long run? Where did we leave behind the social business transformation? How Do I Make Sense of Social Networking Tools

Luis Suarez

and while I will be answering the first part over the course of time with the various blog entries I’m currently drafting along, I thought for today I’d focus on trying to answer the second part: how do I make sense of social networking tools today? And SmartCloud for Social Business does that beautifully. I have gone through that path far too many times with other social tools and it’s never been pretty.

Reality check: intelligence agencies have been using social network analysis since the 1990s

Trends in the Living Networks

Gathers Data on Social Connections of U.S. I fail to understand why this is big news, since US intelligence agencies have been using social network analysis (SNA) for domestic purposes since the 1990s, and likely even before that. I have been focused on networks since long before I wrote Living Networks in 2002. If intelligence agencies have large data sets, it would be a massive failure on their part not to be using network analysis.

Google Plus – One Social Networking Tool to Rule Them All

Jane Hart

In the workplace, social learning comes through social collaboration. Social learning is a natural everyday phenomenon; simply put, we learn from our colleagues as we work with them. For this reason the new enterprise social platforms (like Enterprise Social Networks (ESNs) that underpin social collaboration are your most valuable social learning platforms. Social learning

Reflections on the early days of social networking as LinkedIn reaches 100 million users

Trends in the Living Networks

While I closely followed the social networking space at the time, I didn’t join many. When I was writing Living Networks in 2002 there were no true social networking applications in existence. I had eagerly joined SixDegrees.com , the very first social networking application, not long after it was founded in 1997, highly excited by its potential. Ryze , one of the most popular social platforms of the day, is now a shadow of its former self.

How Social Networking Can Improve Work Meetings

Luis Suarez

You may be thinking that one of the disadvantages of having moved into this new job as Lead Social Business Enabler at IBM is that I basically spend far too much time meeting up with my new team. You know, All Hands Meetings, Cadence Calls, Weekly Team Meetings, Status Project Reports, Monthly Calls and what not can eventually be conducted and rather effectively through various different social technologies. .

Social Network Portability

Posted to the social-network-portability list, August 21, 2007. First, social network portability Not coincidentally the name of this list. Not an aggregation of all social networks in the world or anything like that. Think of a person's personal social network on, say, Facebook. Other social networks will roll this their own way. Because the idea here isn't so much to broadcast one's social network to the world.

Work Stream #4 – Speaking at Client Events

Luis Suarez

I guess there is another kind of unexpected thrill around freelancing that I didn’t think would be possible before, and yet it’s been one of the most rewarding I can relate to from my nearly three years long journey as an independent adviser on Social Business and Digital Transformation: speaking at clients’ events. After having written about what are some of my current work streams as a freelancer in the realm of Social Business and Digital Transformation (i.e.

The future of events: technology to make presentations interactive and social

Ross Dawson

Some events today have innovative formats and strong audience participation. I approach this idea as both a speaker and an event organizer. I have been a professional speaker for over 15 years, and have also organized many conferences and events, including our Future of Media Summits , the first cross-continental conferences ever held. Over the last year or two Australia has been catching up with some of the world’s most innovative event formats,” says Mr Dawson.

Snap Bird – Experimenting with Curation of Live Tweeting at Conference Events

One of the many activities I keep enjoying quite a bit over the course of the years with regards to social networking is its innate ability to experiment and play with social technologies in order to figure out new use cases, proofs of concept, additional bursts of productivity, new business uses, etc. Well, as you well know, there used to be a time where I had enough time in my hands to live blog conference events that I would be attending from all over the place.

Why it matters that networks in organizations and social systems are shifting to power-law distributions

Ross Dawson

Below is the video of the section of my presentation on Networks. Here is a summary of the points made in the video: * Networks are fundamental not just to our communications but to many aspects of our lives. There are many network topologies. One of the most important is ‘scale-free’ networks, in which the structure is identical irrespective of its size. * However these types of networks are also evident in biological systems such as cells and brains. *

Will the Respect Network enable us to take back control of our data and our lives?

Ross Dawson

Yesterday I attended the Sydney launch event of the Respect Network , an initiative designed to allow individuals to own and take control of their data. Take Back Control from Respect Network on Vimeo. The Respect Network seems to have a very solid foundation. There is a one-time fee to join the Respect Network of US$25. My initial response to this was that this will inevitably limit the uptake of the network.

Civic crowdfunding and the future of government and taxation

Ross Dawson

My background in capital markets and long-standing perspective of the living networks has made it a natural space for me, in looking at new ways our collective financial resources can yield the greatest economic and social benefit. Many projects are low budget and ones that local citizens see value in supporting, such as local gardens or events, however there is a very diverse range of kinds of civic projects.

The aforementioned line is recognized as the first known use of the term ‘weapons of mass destruction’ But today, in 2013, I want to discuss a new weapon — a weapon of class destruction — and that weapon is social. Let’s first define what I mean by ‘class’ I’d like the term class in my social as a weapon of class destruction thesis to denote two things for purposes of this piece: societal & organizational status.
