Open Source Business Model

Tony Karrer

A recent spate of posts on the challenges of running an open source business is interesting ( Tosh , Siemens , Downes , Tosh 2 , ). Dave Tosh laments - Elgg is the most popular white label social networking platform in the world powering over 2000 networks. However, Elgg could power 100,000 networks and it would make no difference - there is no revenue stream as we give everything away under a GPL license.

Where are open source learning applications?

Tony Karrer

Good post by Harold Jarche - Where are open source learning applications? In it he points to the learning space and says that the current status of open-source learning applications is: Innovators - Elgg Learning Landscape and several others Early Adopters - Moodle and a few others Early Majority - nobody Late Majority - forget about it I would tend to agree with him that there are relatively few open-source learning applications, but would add a few thoughts.

These might be proprietary systems like Jive , Podio , Yammer , Socialcast , or open source software, like WordPress / Buddypress or Elgg.

The Role of Open Educational Resources in Personal Learning

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Presented to the Best Practices in Upgrading Online,Calgary, via Adobe Connect, March 29, 2011 The very first thing I want to do is to counter thedisclaimer that frightened me as this session opened, it was very loud, andsaid all kinds of things about how this was all private and cannot be shared. You can share this presentation all you want. I do want to talk about the role of open educationalresources in personal learning. What does it mean to say thatour network is open?

Rejected: On being disappointed, sorta

George Siemens

I find conference presentations, blogging, open courses, and interactions online much more satisfying. Several prominent researchers and organizations are now exploring next-generation online and hybrid learning models based social networked technologies: Goodyear (2011); SocialLearn (The Open University) 2011; and OpenClass (Pearson, n.d.). MIT’s OpenCourseWare initiative in 2002 increased attention to open and free sharing of educational course materials (see MIT, 2011).

Sense-making with PKM

For centuries, knowledge exchanges were limited to elites but we now have access to world’s largest and most open exchange ever created. OS = open source. Elgg (OS).

E-Learning Generations

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

( version française ) In recent years I have been working on two major concepts:first, the connectivist theory of online learning, which views learning as anetwork process; and second, the massive open online course, or MOOC, which isan instantiation of that process. This enabled a more fine-grained presentation oflearning content than traditional sources such as textbooks and universitycourses. These principles are, briefly, autonomy, diversity, openness andinteractivity.

Identifying a collaboration platform

The options then become: Open the LMS so it can be used in the daily workflow. I recently described one such platform – Elgg: it’s a community effort : Another platform that I have used since its early days is Elgg , an open source social networking platform that attracted me because of its unique underlying model. We started using Elgg for an online medical community of practice in 2004 after going through dozens of platforms.

Beyond Institutions Personal Learning in a Networked World

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

As Peter said this is part 2 of a trilogy of talks, I gave the first one yesterday at University of Greenwich on the topic of "Open learning and open educational resources". As one of the people who invented the massive open online course, I feel a little personally involved here.

Moodle Course Conversion

Jay Cross's Informal Learning

Moodle is an open source course management system with a wide following. The Open University in the UK uses it to support 200,000 distance learners. My friends at CV&A in Spain have implemented Moodle to support informal learning in numerous corporations.

Making Software, Making Money

And not so far as when he says that open source does not work. I hate to be the one to state the obvious, but: the fact that open source didn't work for Dave Tosh doesn't mean that open source doesn't work. He writes, Having worked on a true open source project for more than three years I am now more convinced than ever that the open source model does not work. The project to which he refers, of course, is ELGG.

Selecting OS learning technology platforms

Harold Jarche

All are open source and there are a variety of hosting models available for most budgets. I use a similar approach in initially analysing technology needs, succinctly stated by Dave: I like to put CMSs into three simple categories based on the CMSs that I think of as being best of breed in the open market right now. I would add Elgg to mix if there is an interest in the functionality of Ning, but with the advantage of open source.

New Technology Supporting Informal Learning

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Downes, 2007) We need to consider learners not only as the subjects of learning, entities to whom we deliver learning content, but also the sources of learning, functioning as the perceptual input for the wider network. Drupal, an open source content management system, enables the creation of individual accounts, the creation of discussion posts and pages and other content, and the sharing of this content online with other community members.

DIY is here

Harold Jarche

Open source Elgg may replace Ning with a non locked-in platform, but its success remains to be seen. Over three years ago I wrote that the future of learning is DIY : With Google you can find most information that you need. YouTube is a quick and easy way to get “learning objects” to the world. Apple gives the essential tools for knowledge workers, and in a nice package. Wikipedia has shown that the wisdom of crowds is just as good as the wisdom of elites.

Introduction to Social Networking

Harold Jarche

Now open to anyone, you will still find that Facebook is the preferred network for Millenials who see the encroachment of Boomers and, to a lesser extent, Gen X into the network as cause for some alarm. We are operating this class on the Ning platform [the description of how we used Ning still pertains to other social networking platforms such as Elgg or Grou.ps ]. For instance, this website is on WordPress , an open source blogging platform.

Social Media Goals

Drupal is an open source CMS that’s been used for social media, and Elgg similarly started as an open source portfolio tool but has expanded. I spent yesterday touring the Web 2.0 expo (part of the time with fellow miscreant Jay Cross ), and it led me to think a bit more about social media tools and approaches.
