Social Bookmarking Tricks for Group Learning

Tony Karrer

The question was: How are you posting the social bookmarking links on your site? So let me answer that question first and then let me mention a couple of other things that you might want to do with Social Bookmarking tools. You can do the same thing on del.icio.us: [link] and most of the other Social Bookmarking services have similar capabilities. Have I mentioned that I love getting questions.

Introduction to Wikis, Blogs, Social Bookmarking, Social Networking and RSS

Tony Karrer

As background for an upcoming presentation, I wanted to create a page that provides background resources that explain various eLearning 2.0 Social Bookmarking Social Networking Wikis RSStools. I immediately thought of the Common Craft videos. I've embedded them below. Are there other good introductory resources? How about for blogs?

Thoughts on my ASTD TK07 Sessions - Social Bookmarking and Blogging

Tony Karrer

At ASTD TechKnowledge , I did three sessions around Blogging and Social Bookmarking. Unlike past conference sessions on eLearning 2.0, My hope would be that the following might occur: Some attendees will try out reading/writing blogs, using an RSS reader (like bloglines), and/or use social bookmarking tools to support their personal learning. First - want to thank Jay Cross for taking pictures at various ASTD events.

Open Source eLearning Tools

Tony Karrer

I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. You can find a long list of tools broken into authoring tools, games/simulations, quiz/test tools, social media, delivery platforms, tracking and whether they support mobile. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools.

Examples of eLearning 2.0

During my presentation last Thursday that was an introduction to eLearning 2.0 as part of an online event for the eLearningGuild, I mentioned a few common ways that I've seen eLearning 2.0 internal processes on wiki starting to use wikis internally Moving faculty bookmarks to Delicious use wiki for learners to craft definition of 'seamless service' after searching orgs that proclaim to provide seamless service We hope to build wikis that our students can use to share information.

Janet juxtaposes the recent inclusion of eLearning 2.0 The questions she raises are: Is the edupunk ideology saying that the use of social media in commercial learning management systems is an assault on the very philosophy of learning 2.0? If you have a population of learners who have already adopted tools (such as blogging and social bookmarking) for themselves that are different than the corporate tool (the LMS) do you ask them to move?

Tony Karrer

One interesting result is that the audience for my eLearning 2.0 Social Bookmarking and Wikis and Blogs are a form of social networking I never said this, but several people pointed it out in the chat. The same thing can be true with social bookmarking, wikis, flickr, etc. Using social bookmarking or meme tracking works okay. Going back through the back chat / back channel during my presentation was really interesting to me.

Work Literacy Launch

Clark Quinn

This venture comes partly from my experiences doing presentations, workshops, blogging around eLearning 2.0. When discussing new(ish) tools like blogs and social bookmarking, and discussing things like advanced search techniques, there's a gap in knowledge work skills.

Web 2.0 Learning

Tony Karrer

I've read a bit from ( here , here , and here ) about Jet Blue's use of web 2.0 / social media tools to communicate between their staff of learning professionals. This is another great example of eLearning 2.0. The Awareness platform includes tools such as blogs, wikis and social bookmarking / tagging. This allows faculty to get to know each other socially in order to be more effective sharing and working together later.

Emergent Knowledge Management

Tony Karrer

Structure would come from a layer on top such as social bookmarking and digg, and, of course, from search across unstructured content. There would be tools like social networks that would allow us to find people inside and outside the enterprise. There's been a long running discussion around what Knowledge Management is going to look like going forward and whether big systems that manage knowledge are going to be there.

Web 2.0 Tools in the Enterprise

Tony Karrer

I'd also suggest that part of the reason that I always suggest that Wikis will get faster uptake than things like Blogs and Social Bookmarking is that Wikis can be a better replacement for something else without much behavior change. Is it widespread among eLearning Professionals? I first saw Andrew McAffee's post on uses of Web 2.0 approaches inside of corporations - quite good at identifying some different patterns.

Training Design

Tony Karrer

Virtual classroom, web-based training (WBT), rapidly created eLearning, lots of online reference tools such as help, cheat sheets, online manuals. Maybe this more appropriately would be called Learning Design - or eLearning Design - or maybe something else that implies performance support as well. First Thoughts After ASTD Sessions

Tony Karrer

The first session was an Introduction to eLearning 2.0. The slides were similar to eLearning 2.0 Almost no one was familiar with social bookmarking. I tried to go all the way from the overall landscape to individual tools back to the new landscape that is eLearning 2.0. The Second Session was intended to be a discussion session that was eLearning 2.0 - Applications and Implications - a follow-up to the first session.

There's some truth to that, but at the end of my What's New in eLearning session (on blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, rss readers, etc.) There's been quite a bit of discussion going on around Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and personal learning environments. We talked about this briefly during a session with Tony O'Driscoll , Brent Schelenker , and Steven Downes at the eLearningGuild. And then over beers.

Last week I presented a session at ASTD TechKnowledge entitled eLearning 2.0 - Applications and Implications. This is something that gets discussed as emergent: see Emergent Knowledge Management , Direction of eLearning - Emergence or Big System , and Future Platforms for eLearning.
