Mobile Payments - a Long, Relentless War of Attrition

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The key barrier to the adoption of these mobile payment innovations is that while the payment system that we’ve long used is highly complex and inflexible, it actually works quite well. “As it turns out, consumers like dipping and swiping just fine and are not dissatisfied with their plastic cards, even if they happen to have a phone in their hand with the capacity to use a mobile wallet.”. The Dark Side of Technology

John Hagel

They began with a burst of innovation at the technology level, but then quickly stabilized with only incremental performance improvements afterwards.    That in turn led to a burst of innovation at the infrastructure level, figuring out how to most effectively organize and deliver the value of this technology to business and society. I’m going to disrupt the Silicon Valley script. You know the one.

Re-Building Trust in Our Institutions

John Hagel

As humans, we have a natural psychological tendency when confronted with fear to magnify our perception of risk and discount our perception of reward, we therefore tend to shrink our time horizons, just focusing on the present and, as a result, we tend to fall into a zero sum view of the world (it’s a win/lose proposition) and trust erodes because at the end of the day we know only one of us is going to win and the rest will lose. I wrote about the trust paradox about 8 years ago.

What Is To Be Done? (Part 1)

John Hagel

I’m going to explore three elements of this path – passion, institutional innovation and narrative – that will have to come together if we are to successfully navigate the Big Shift and harness the opportunity it creates.   We’ll begin to be more motivated by perceived rewards and discount the perceived risks along the way. My last post on The Dark Side of Technology definitely seems to have hit a responsive chord.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

John Hagel

Third, we’ve been dramatically supported along the way by technology innovation that has helped us to do more with less, culminating with recent decades of exponential digital technology performance improvement that shows no signs of slowing down. When we're gripped by fear, we have a natural human tendency to magnify perception of risk and discount perception of reward.

The Big Shift in Strategy - Part 2

John Hagel

These shaping strategies are particularly powerful because they’re highly leveraged on two levels – they mobilize the resources of a large and growing number of participants and they create a rich opportunity for distributed innovation so that everyone learns faster as more participants join. Motivating People tend to magnify risk and discount reward when faced with rapid change and high uncertainty, prompting them to delay action or, at best, to make very modest and tentative moves.

Shaping Strategies

John Hagel

In times of high uncertainty, we all have a natural tendency to discount rewards and magnify risk. The opportunity for aspiring shapers is to flip that risk/reward perception by magnifying perceptions of rewards and discounting perceptions of risk. Fourth, these ecosystems create incentives for distributed innovation among participants. We are all familiar with the concept of open innovation. In times of high uncertainty, adaptation is the winning strategy.

Idea management requires shared power

Harold Jarche

Convening is the skill and practice of bringing groups together to develop understanding of complex issues, create new knowledge and spur innovation. Organizational members also have a role in transparency, that is, to be open about what is happening at their level, rather than hiding or discounting bad news to appease management – to bring the best available knowledge to bear on organizational issues.

Why PKM?

Harold Jarche

Klein’s observations on insight, are reinforced by the work of Steven Johnson , who concluded in his study of the history of innovation and where good ideas come from, that “Chance favours the connected mind.”. For more information on individual PKM development, see the PKM in 40 Days online workshop (discount until 30 April). Here is a short video introduction on why personal knowledge mastery ( PKM ) is becoming a required skill and mindset for professionals today.
