I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools.

Initially, you can start where only your instructional designers / writers are allowed to make changes. Then, maybe open it up to subject matter experts. Wouldn't you rather have it out in the open? Open up editing slowly.

In the past few weeks, I've had some really eye-opening conversations about the state of Learning as a Business. It reminds me a bit of the arguments about the loss of quality as you lose our instructional design and go to cheaper forms of delivery. Every corporation worth its salt opened a training department. And you are competing with a perception that there are free/open or public or cheap versions of all of these things. Don't I just use SharePoint?
