What Universities Must Learn About Social Networks

Jay Cross

What Universities Must Learning About Social Networks. Increasingly, businesses are looking to more social approaches to employee learning and development. THE ISSUE IS NOT whether you are going to become a socially networked university but how soon. Businesses are being transformed into social businesses. Social business is the flavor of the day in the C-suites of the Fortune 500. Networks are the glue that connects us.

The Service Design Conference Speaker Preview: Dave Gray

Adaptive Path

Why do you think a conference about service design and experience is relevant now? Social networks and mobile devices are dramatically changing what customers expect. Customer expectations are rising exponentially and service design is the only way that companies can meet these high expectations. I'm certain that service design is going to be one of the most important design disciplines in the coming decades. Folllow @thesxconf for updates and news

Why your networks and collaboration are at the heart of the value you create

Trends in the Living Networks

I was recently interviewed for an extended article Networked Business: The wealth in your connections written by Nick Saalfeld for the Microsoft Talking Business series. It’s a fallacy to think of networking as a sales tool. Social trends, meanwhile, show that workers have higher expectations of their jobs, workplaces and career options. This is obviously great news for small businesses, who (red tape willing…) will have unprecedented access to corporate clients.

Wise Chief Learning Officers are thinking about how social networks will augment learning & development. Social business is the flavor of the day in the C-suites of the Fortune 500. The allure of social business is captivating. and learning networks.

My 25 Years of Ed Tech

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

My contributions included this effort in learning design. s easy to forget the importance of the early instant messaging services, because they played such a significant role in developing a lot of the thinking that would eventually result on social networks and more. By 1993 I had written The Network Phenomenon , which is essentially a post-constructivist post-cognitivist theory of knowledge. For me, 2002 was the year of learning object repository networks.

The Future of Work and Learning 2: Chatbots

Jane Hart

Firstly, use of mobile devices has now exceeded use of desktop machines to access the Internet, and secondly, people are now spending more time in messaging apps than in social networks. A bot, or as it is more commonly known, a chatbot, is a piece of software that’s designed to simulate a conversation with a (human) user in the interest of giving you information that you want or enable you to complete a transaction ( source ). Social learning

Networked: Harvard Magazine

George Siemens

The last decade has seen an explosion in interest in networks. Some fields – such as sociology – have been grappling with network phenomenon for decades. Others, like mathematics, have been grappling with network attributes for centuries. But, starting in the late 1990’s, networks moved from being the exclusive domain of researchers to being a common phenomenon that we all experience on a daily basis.

Anybody Know a Good Community Manager?

Andy McAfee

Global recessions and financial crises aside, we think that the most important trend in the business world today is the digitization of… well, everything: Processes, tasks, jobs, business models, innovation, social networks and communities, customer interactions and understanding, experimentation and prototyping — the list goes on and on.

The Enterprise 2.0 Recovery Plan

Andy McAfee

Recovery Plan by Andrew McAfee on December 1, 2008 Recent events in the news have inspired a thought experiment: I asked myself what I would do if I were put in charge of IT as part of the turnaround effort at a big US automaker. Weak-tie networks are great places to look for novel information and introductions to valuable people. And social networking software (SNS) is a great tool for building, maintaining, and exploiting networks of weak ties.

The Future of Online Learning 2020

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Another argument is that schools are essential for socialization. Breaking things creates social problems. It's a social problem. Online learning is social, or can be social, our community bees can form online, and we've known that for twenty years.

professional learner’s toolkit

Harold Jarche

Jane Hart describes a Modern Professional Learner’s Toolkit as having several components: resources, networks, devices, etc. Trusted Web Resources : CBC News provides me with a Canadian perspective while The Guardian and BBC give me different ones. Curation Tools : My aggregator of choice is Feedly and I keep social bookmarks in Diigo. Social Networks : My preferred conversational and sharing network is Twitter.

The Big Shift in Business Strategy

John Hagel

Business networks and other kinds of business ecosystems are emerging on top of these platforms to help us move from short-term transactions to long-term relationships.   Third, the influence point benefits from network effects that drive consolidation and concentration of participants at the influence point. I’ve spent a long time studying the structure and evolution of social networks and business ecosystems.

Open Education, MOOCs, and Opportunities

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

These were designed originally by organizations such as the Open University, in Britain, and Canada''s Athabasca University. Technological systems based on these designs were first developed by the aviation industry, in the form of the AICC specification (Aviation Industry Computer Based Training (CBT) Committee). Content Syndication Networks The concept of content syndication originates with the newspaper industry. which is essentiallythe cMOOC design).

Platforms Are Not Created Equal: Harnessing the Full Potential of Platforms

John Hagel

In fact, the definition they offer of business platforms is: “a nexus of rules and infrastructure that facilitate interactions among network users” or, alternatively, “a published standard, together with a governance model, that facilitates third party participation.” Social platforms These are similar to aggregation platforms in the sense of aggregating a lot of people – think of all the broad-based social platforms we’ve come to know and love: Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Saving the Internet—and all the commons it makes possible

Doc Searls

By nature and design, it can’t be tragic , any more than the Universe can be tragic. See, the Internet is designed to support every possible use, every possible institution, and—alas—every possible restriction, which is shy enclosure is possible. The Internet was designed to support infinite production by anybody of anything. What you will find is pervasive surveillance of everyone and everything—and ranking of people in its Social Credit System.

Twitter Is Where Conversations Go To Die

Luis Suarez

It took email over 30 odd years to reach that status where more and more people started to question its long-standing status quo within the corporate world and it looks like Twitter has accelerated that same perception to just a few years within the Social Web, without even entering the corporate world altogether!, Twitter has now become, once again, another messaging board system, like a good bunch of them out there of the once so-called social networking sites.

Replacing Email?

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

My Facebook friends, meanwhile, which peaked at 3000 or so, have *dropped* to 1800 - many people don't want the newsletter in their social networking. There may be a lot of traffic in social networks and instant messaging, but it's personal traffic, replacing what used to be accomplished with a quick phone call. People creating email, web and RSS products are already well into the design of corresponding apps.

MOOCs for the win!

George Siemens

Massive open online courses, or MOOCs, are getting attention on various blogs and news sites. The connectivist MOOCs, on the other hand, are highly social. The learning comes from content presented by a lecturer, and then dialog via social media, where the contributions of the participants are shared. We decided that experiencing networked learning was important to understanding networked learning. Traditional learning design tries to reduce complexity.

Google Plus and The Social Media Moonshot

Andy McAfee

’ So I’m using G+ to contribute social content very broadly, and to consume MSM content. This is probably not what its designers envisioned. My Facebook News Feed, TweetDeck ‘All Friends’ column, and default G+ Stream all have some great content in them and I check them a lot. At its best, social media these days is like having, as the writer Margaret Atwood put it , fairies at the bottom of the garden.
