Designing E-Learning 3.0 in gRSShopper - 2

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

In the previous segment I decided to create a course with modules and sections, and set up the modules. I'll fill out the actual content of those modules over time. What I want to do is list the course modules and events (there's only one course so I don't need to list courses).

The RSS Feed The course isn't truly distributed until it has an RSS feed. We'll use the course newsletter as our RSS feed, except we'll publish the output in rss2 format instead of HTML. So, exactly as before, we'll build the RSS page in the page Editor.

Of course we've done that with the Your Feeds page, but that page is designed for humans. I could use a Perl Module to create the OPML file. The disadvantage is that it means installing yet another Perl module.

I took a few minutes to comment out the references to the Facebook OAuth module (which is now depreciated) and also to remove a 'defined' operator (which is also depreciated). There's also a way to do it by RSS. Up until now, the 'publicationDate' RSS tag has been throwaway.

In other words, to define the 'authors' table first, and define 'post' later, so that you can select the author table from a list when defining how to designate the post author. First of all, how do define events: I needed to decide between the ' Calendar ' module and the 'CCK' module. How about the Calendar module? I don't understand the thinking behind the module pages in Drupal. And why doesn't the 'support forum' link to a module-specific support forum?

A New Website, Part Seven - Converting The Data

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

This is a bit tricky because my website includes both harvested content from Edu_RSS and generated content such as my articles and posts. Tricky, but not impossible, for as we have seen Drupal also has an RSS aggregator. I had always kept the two types of content - Edu_RSS links and my own content - separate, but recently I started putting all that into one big table, distinguished only by content 'type' and by the author. module, something that's firmly developed for 5.0,

Introduction to Social Networking

tools are a form of social networking, but for this module we’re going to focus on “ego-centric&# social networks, those that are focused on individuals, as opposed to networks that build up around objects, such as Delicious, Flickr, Slideshare, etc. LinkedIn is primarily a professional network, designed to facilitate linkages between people who are wanting to connect for work-related purposes.

Distance Learning

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

A reader writes, I've just changed jobs and am now supporting the development of a distance learning module delivered almost entirely online. However, a lot of online learning is designed as though for children or younger university students. You write that your are "now supporting the development of a distance learning module delivered almost entirely online." I would also use an RSS-to-email service for those students who aren't yet using an RSS reader regularly.

The software developed to support the course - called gRSShopper, written by myself - was designed to enable the use of open educational resources (OERs) and to aggregate student contributions nwritten using their own weblog environment (and later, discussion boards, Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, and more). I've been working with aggregators since the beginning of RSS and of course have been influenced here by the work of people like Dave Winer and Aaron Swartz, among many others.

E-Learning Generations

Another key idea was the design of the gaming space itself.Early computer games (and many early arcade games) were designed likeprogrammed learning: they were like a flow chart, guiding you through a seriesof choices to a predetermined conclusion. Second, it created the idea that these content modules orchunks were sharable. To this day, the learningmanagement system is designed essentially to present content and supportdiscussion and activities around that content.
