If Your Enterprise Social Network Is a Ghost Town It’s Probably Due To Your Corporate Culture

Dan Pontefract

We deployed our enterprise social network last year, but it’s a ghost town. They’re windowless and the carpets look as though designers around the world have colluded with one another to see who can come up with the most bizarre patterns possible.

Formal learning & social networking

Clark Quinn

After hearing Mark Oehlert and Brent Schlenker do such a great job on eLearning 2.0 Much of elearning 2.0 is about informal learning, but the organization was moving to using social networking tools to scaffold their move from face-to-face to more online learning. So I was asked to talk about social networking and formal learning. I then segued to my second point, which is that social networking tools are better formal learning.

Thoughts on Learning Design Strategy

Clark Quinn

At the DevLearn conference, I ran a Morning Buzz on Learning Design Strategy. I started with a set of questions to address, so I’ll go through their comments in roughly that order (though we didn’t exactly follow this structure): What is learning design strategy?

There are recommendations as well, such as governments would do well to sponsor more elearning, and that universities need to focus more on what’s important.

The eLearning Guild is celebrating it’s 10th year, and is using the opportunity to reflect on what learning will look like 10 years from now. While I couldn’t participate in the twitter chat they held, I optimistically weighed in: “learning in 2024 will look like individualized personal mentoring via augmented reality, AI, and the network” However, I thought I would elaborate in line with a series of followup posts leveraging the #lrn2024 hashtag.

Supporting Cognitive Performance

Clark Quinn

We can automate it if we totally understand it, but the best solution is to let technology (and design) do what it can, and let our brains fill in what we do best. We want to design a solution system, not just a course. So the preference should be to design either a really good support system that helps in characterization of the problem, and a dialog that helps determine what of the possible solutions matches up with the situation. design meta-learning strategy technology

Slow Learning – #change11

Clark Quinn

Would it look like an LMS over here, training away over there, job aids scattered across portals, and social networks hierarchically structured or completely banned? It talks about modeling, scaffolding and release, naturally incorporating social and meaningful activity into the learning process. However, it still doesn’t consider, really, engagement, nor does an adequate job of considering when connecting to a person is a more valuable solution than designing content.
