Training Design

Tony Karrer

I've been struggling a bit to capture a concept that I believe represents a fairly fundamental shift in how we need to think about Training Design. Oh, and I called it Learning Design in the diagrams, but I'm afraid that it's really more about Training Design.

Flow

Scott Leslie has put together a number of media resources on the concept of the educator as disc jockey (DJ), including: Open Educator as DJ Wiki. I like Scott’s diagram that looks at the flow of being an open educator.

Making Your L&D Department Meaningful & Relevant

Charles Jennings

The diagram below provides a good model for establishing a governance structure. If they stick to dedicating most of their time to designing learning events they are unlikely to be adding real value.

Informal Learning – the other 80%

Jay Cross

To thrive in this environment, everyone must become student and faculty and publisher and instructional designer. Think of a domain, say, chip designers. Designers usually only look at the formal component of learning.

Sustainability and MOOCs in Historical Perspective

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Learning design was an attempt to emulate what was called programmed learning in the course packages, a way of leading the student through the materials one step at a time. The interaction part of MuniMall worked really well and, in fact, the community lasted for 10 years from the original design. People learn for themselves and they design their own learning. This is a diagram by Scott Wilson who works in Great Britain. How did we design this?

Access2OER: The CCK08 Solution

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The course was designed to operate in a distributed environment; we did not centralize on a single platform or technology. The design of the course - as a distributed connectivist-model course - created a structure in which the course contents formed a cluster of resources around a subject-area, rather than a linear set of materials that all students must follow. Contributed to the UNESCO OER discussion list , February 16, 2009.

LAMS provides rich functionality for designing a "flow” of learning activities, especially where these activities rely on collaboration between students to drive the learning process. Their particular implementation of voting, forum, questions, chat, surveys, wiki, etc.

Connectivism and Transculturality

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

This is only a very partial chart of these language, and really, if you were going to draw a full chart of these languages, this is just the derivation of different languages from their sources, but if you were to map the influence from one language to another language to another language you would get a very complex diagram. I love this diagram. This is one of my favourite diagrams in the entire world. I have a diagram in Spanish, how about that?

New Technology Supporting Informal Learning

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The intent of such systems is to to facilitate the conversation and interaction around episodic learning events in a distributed environment, transforming them from elements in a linear flow-based design to free-floating objects in an environment. Ng & Wiemer-Hastings, 2005) That said, these environments, by their very nature, require intense preparation on the part of the designer. For example, a learning system called Company Command, designed by officers in the U.S.

How the Net Works

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The purpose of this paper is to describe how network learning works and to show how an understanding of network learning can inform the design and evaluation of online learning applications. Looking at successful websites in general (and looking at usability, information architecture, and other design documents) we can identify three major criteria: interaction, usability and relevance. It involves both aspects of effective content design and aspects of dynamic search and placement.

The Reality of Virtual Learning

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The old model is – well, this diagram (the SCORM diagram) is just a few years old - the old model is less than a decade old. I’ve identified three major types of mechanisms by which these connections are formed in this diagram here. I’ve represented it in this diagram. This diagram merges or combines two major functions. And so, there’s a web site out there called Wiki Educator, which is using these Kaltura videos. A classic example of course is the wiki.

Kirschner, Sweller, Clark (2006) - Readings

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The past half-century of empirical research on this issue has provided overwhelming and unambiguous evidence that minimal guidance during instruction is significantly less effective and efficient than guidance specifically designed to support the cognitive processing necessary for learning. Recent developments in instructional research and instructional design models that support guidance during instruction are briefly described.
