Informal Learning Technology

Tony Karrer

There's a fantastic post by Stephen Downes - New Technology Supporting Informal Learning. In his post, he really is looking primarily at the University of Manitoba's Connectivism Course that he designed and delivered with George Siemens to 2200 students in Fall 2008 and you can tell that he's busy thinking about the technology behind the Fall 2009 course. This is the same technology that is behind eLearning Learning and Communities and Networks Connection.

Social and connective lock-in

George Siemens

Well, the obvious answer is to seek lock-in around something that can’t be readily moved – not for technological reasons, but for sociological ones. When Twitter was experiencing downtime issues a few years ago, some individuals moved to Plurk, Identi.ca, or other services. But, in the end, the social lock-in of Twitter was sufficient to pull many back. An important part of PLE/Ns is giving individuals the skills and technology to control our connections.

Sustainability and MOOCs in Historical Perspective

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

It's a basis in technology that we all understand and we're all more or less comfortable with. One model where the company, and Blackboard began this way, would post all of the technology on their site, and you would buy the service from them. You see what's happening here, underlining these already, we're beginning to get the basic building blocks of technology and pedagogy in models of online learning. Simple to be able to use that technology.
