A Quick Definition of Neo-Liberalism

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

In response to Alex Usher (and in anticipation of future posts in his series): This is an interesting start, though I would have hoped for a more tightly bound definition at least by the end of part one. Each of the four senses of neo-liberalism that you raise can be qualified in important ways. - the role of markets - does not just mean the use of markets. In neo-liberalism, this means that markets are unregulated, or minimally, self-regulated.

Open Educational Resources: A Definition

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The Definition Open educational resources are materials used to support education that may be freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone. I'm not sure I'd really support the idea of an "official" definition, but when I have reason to describe succinctly what OER means, I'd personally be happy to use this version. I don't support the idea of an 'official' definition either. The statement takes the classic three-part form of definition: 1.

A definition of good men

Doc Searls

I won’t go into details, because it’s a private matter for the people involved. But the story is about a good woman and her loving husband and sons, all good men in the full meaning of that term. A few minutes ago I was thinking in the shower about what “good men” actually meant. This is the answer that came to me: They’ve got your back, and they’ve got your heart. Wanted to share that while it’s still fresh. Life "good men

My Definition of Work and an Update on Book Two

Dan Pontefract

Like my first book, Flat Army: Creating a Connected and Engaged Organization , Book Two has taken a decided turn for the better. Originally, Flat Army was written as a fable. The original title was “ The Coffee Shop Leader” One day, I may even release the entirety of the book in its original format. But I received timely and magical guidance from a few people, most notably Don Loney, and the rest is history. The same can be said for this next book.

Adopting The No Asshole Rule: Dont Bother If The Words Are Hollow » Richard Feynman On The Folly Of Crafting Precise Definitions.   When behavioral scientists started pushing for precise definitions of concepts like effectiveness and leadership, he would sometimes confuse them (even though Larry is a very precise thinker) by arguing "there is a negative relationship between precision and accuracy."   I agree that definitions are useful at times.

Has the Economic Meltdown & 9/11 Impacted our Definition of Teams?

Dan Pontefract

Does this have an impact to the definition of a team? This must have some effect on the definition of a team, or at a minimum, the way in which the team interacts, operates and achieves its goals. I do believe with the advent of various web and social technologies, coupled by the Phase 1 and Phase 3 events outlined above, we have forever changed the definition of a ‘team’.

Definition (n) An explicit formulation of what is obvious to most other people

David Weinberger

In the course of the back and forth on the mailing list, one participant got angry about the site and quoted the dictionary definition of “avenger” : a·venge [uh-venj] verb (used with object), a·venged, a·veng·ing. It would be perfectly reasonable to push back on the word because it carries bad connotations or because it doesn’t quite fit the intended meaning, but neither of those conversations is advanced by citing the dictionary definition of a common word.

A Simple Definition of Knowledge?

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Responding to George Siemens's A Simple Definition of Knowledge. The traditional definition of knowledge is 'justified true belief'. There are many problems with that definition, but it does point to the fact that we think of 'knowledge' as being something broadly mental and propositional. I am sympathetic to the non-representational picture of knowledge suggested by the definition - but if knowledge is non-representational, then what is it?

Tony Karrer

They used the word "to" in their definition which I would interpret to mean that you are only including "intentional learning" not including "unexpected learning." My point is that it's somewhat dangerous for all of us to call ourselves "learning professionals" and to work in this field if the common definition of learning excludes informal and unexpected learning I found this via Donald Clark's blog.

The social way to the future Cloud computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand, like the electricity grid Thats the definition from the wiki and its pretty fine if you ask me. Therefore, Private Cloud has now been invented (no definition available from the wiki!) where basically the word Internet in the definition above can be replaced by vendor or system integrator.
