Open Educational Resources: A Definition

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

The Definition Open educational resources are materials used to support education that may be freely accessed, reused, modified and shared by anyone. I'm not sure I'd really support the idea of an "official" definition, but when I have reason to describe succinctly what OER means, I'd personally be happy to use this version. I don't support the idea of an 'official' definition either. The statement takes the classic three-part form of definition: 1.

Adopting The No Asshole Rule: Dont Bother If The Words Are Hollow » Richard Feynman On The Folly Of Crafting Precise Definitions.   When behavioral scientists started pushing for precise definitions of concepts like effectiveness and leadership, he would sometimes confuse them (even though Larry is a very precise thinker) by arguing "there is a negative relationship between precision and accuracy."   I agree that definitions are useful at times.

Problems with Bargh’s definition of unconscious

Mind Hacks

Specifically, I argue that (1) a widely employed definition of unconscious processing, promoted by John Bargh is incoherent (2) many experiments involve a perspectival sleight of hand taking factors identified from comparison of average group performance and inappropriately ascribing them to the reasoning of individual participants. I have a new paper out in Frontiers in Psychology: The perspectival shift: how experiments on unconscious processing don’t justify the claims made for them.

A Simple Definition of Knowledge?

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Responding to George Siemens's A Simple Definition of Knowledge. The traditional definition of knowledge is 'justified true belief'. There are many problems with that definition, but it does point to the fact that we think of 'knowledge' as being something broadly mental and propositional. I am sympathetic to the non-representational picture of knowledge suggested by the definition - but if knowledge is non-representational, then what is it?

In the course of the back and forth on the mailing list, one participant got angry about the site and quoted the dictionary definition of “avenger” : a·venge [uh-venj] verb (used with object), a·venged, a·veng·ing. It would be perfectly reasonable to push back on the word because it carries bad connotations or because it doesn’t quite fit the intended meaning, but neither of those conversations is advanced by citing the dictionary definition of a common word.

Tony Karrer

They used the word "to" in their definition which I would interpret to mean that you are only including "intentional learning" not including "unexpected learning." The difference between social learning and social collaboration

Jane Hart

But a new definition of social learning has emerged in the last few years; one that implies the use of social technology to underpin learning. For me, this new definition is missing the bigger picture, since it takes no account of where and how most social learning takes place – well outside of formal learning interventions – and in the workplace, in particular, when teams and other groups of people, learn IMPLICITLY from one another as a consequence of working together.
