Innovation in open online courses

George Siemens

In a few weeks, our edX course Data, Analytics, and Learning (#DALMOOC https://www.edx.org/course/utarlingtonx/utarlingtonx-link5-10x-data-analytics-2186 ) will start. We (Carolyn Rose, Dragan Gasevic, Ryan Baker, and I) have spent the last several months thinking through the course structure and format. This is a short overview of the innovations that we want to explore during the course. Learners will have the option to search context relevant resources in ProSolo.

Twitter as Search Engine or Community Seed

Nancy White

The folks over at BrandonHall, the learning folks who blog lots of interesting links, pointed out a value of Twitter that not all of us may have seen yet. Twitter as a search engine. The question always comes up “why would we be interested in something like Twitter. One application I try to show is Twitter as social listening. But I never really conceptualized it as search. First, I searched for something for me. Chocolate , of course.

Twitter, just show us the algorithm - please?

Martijn Linssen

Each (half) hour I measured the frequency, and the place of both tags as a Twitter Trending Topic (T3). But it didnt make it back into T3 According to Mashable , Twitter created their algorithm in May 2010 to get rid of Bieber. On my 3rd Twitter birthday: 7 reasons Twitter is central to my life

Trends in the Living Networks

Earlier today I noticed it’s three years since my life on Twitter began. It now seems strange to me that I was such a late starter compared to many other connected folk, given that Twitter is now so central to my life. The primary reason I held off getting started on Twitter was that I felt that my blog was my primary space for content sharing, and I didn’t want to divide my limited spare attention across platforms. I now know that blogs and Twitter are highly complementary.

Don’t Simply Follow on Twitter, You Should Spend Time Reviewing

Dan Pontefract

In December of 2012, Twitter announced it had surpassed 200 million users. Of course it was CEO Dick Costolo who let us know in the summer of 2012 that 400 million tweets were being sent each day. What I’m referring to is our (or perhaps my) approach to Twitter. When I’m on Twitter, I’m scanning streams, hashtags and searches that I make. Because I may check Twitter infrequently, I may be missing out on potentially golden tweets of individuals.

Twitter's accidental path to monetisation

Martijn Linssen

This just hit me so Im writing it down as pun, but itll probably show up in another post soon Back to business: Twitter suffers from abundance and free, of course, and has done so for years. Then, when the masses started flocking in, Twitter slowly started to make it all less abundant by putting in restrictions or raising existing ones. This way, Twitter is slowly making their feed scarce. Or can you cope without any Twitter whatsoever, at all?

Teaching Online Courses – 60 Great Resources

Tony Karrer

I received an inquiry about resources that would help instructors who are about to move into teaching online courses. If you are going to teach a course online or run an online learning event or an online conference, then there’s even more to being successful at that. I also did some quick searches for various kinds of things and added them into eLearning Learning (via delicious). I would guess that’s an automated search or something – but still very smart way to market/PR.

Comparing Facebook influence to Twitter's: #FBRATE

@Janetter or How I Started to Enjoy Twitter Once Again

Luis Suarez

There used to be a time when I was very much in love with Twitter. To me, it was *the* place to provoke plenty of facilitated serendipity to take place and keep in the know with all of that stuff one gets passionate about over the course of time. But then, after a short while, I started hating Twitter. And it totally hit me when I saw my all time favourite Twitter client ( Nambu ) disappear into thin air just because of that series of misbehaviours.

Twitter Brings Lower Quality Clicks

Tony Karrer

Richard Hoeg points out that for his blog Twitter = High Visits But Low Conversion. Basically, he shows his "referring sites" from Google Analytics for the past two weeks: His conclusion: Folks who visit from Twitter don't visit as many pages and spend less time of the site. Of course, that made me wonder if twitter really was bringing lower quality clicks than other sources. Basically, it's about the same as organic search traffic.

Nancy White and Suzy – An Intro to Twitter

Luis Suarez

Over the last few days, perhaps last couple of weeks, I have been having, once again, that ongoing love / hate relationship with Twitter, inclining itself a little bit more on the hate side of things this time around. How much longer can Twitter put up with providing such poor quality (customer) service, even more so when, not long ago, it killed the one and only reason from its own success from the very beginning a few years back? Tweeting is owned by Twitter.

Reflections on Twitter and social networking

I’ve been using Twitter for a number of weeks now, and that, combined with several recent social networking activities prompted this reflection. There’s lots more for me to learn, of course, but there are powerful reasons to blog about it along the way as well. Twitter is a different story; described as micro-blogging, it’s more immediate, more a pointer.Â
