I end up seeing a lot of different elearning. So, I’d roughly (and generously) estimate that the ratio is around 80:20 for content: practice. So, two questions: do we just need more practice, or do we also have too much content. To start, in most of the elearning I see (even stuff I’ve had a role in, for reasons out of my control), the practice isn’t enough. However, I’ll argue we’re also delivering too much content. design

I continue to have a problem with the term content as a component of what our field does. What we do is create content. In elearning, we create introductions and concept presentations, we portray examples, and we make interactivities that provide practice. Even in F2F training, we have content and structure around actions we ask our learners to take. I believe we need to focus on the activity , not on the content. design strategy

For better or worse, the development of learning content has been a one-way push process. As instructional designers, we create our learning products, package them up with all the content and media, wish them well, and ship them off to the LMS’s – never to be seen again. Once gone, we lose all connection and control of our content – and this has some obvious drawbacks: Content is replicated to each LMS. There is no way to monetize the content.

Interestingly the author chooses to sidestep the question he poses and instead gives a direct answer to a different question (focusing on modules that are parts of a course): What is a good length for a module?
