Complex facilitation

Dave Snowden

My priority today was to get a body of material from various documents and slide sets into the entry for Complex Facilitation. Now some people get complex facilitation but a lot don’t. I always have mixed feelings when I finish a Christmas blog series.

Networks and Complexity (1)

Dave Snowden

Complex human systems, such as organizations, communities or economies, go hand-in-hand with networks. Networks can reveal various structures and various layers in complex systems – the connections (links) between the components are key. The grey links show the reporting relationships.

complexity rules

Harold Jarche

We live and work in a complex system. Simple, traditional linear models do not work in complex systems. Complexity is not complicated, nor linear — “In complex systems, the last thing that happened is almost never informative about what’s coming next.”

Twelvetide 20:08 Anthro-complexity

Dave Snowden

As reported I had to leave the Lake District early and while I will get out and about on the Wiltshire Downs it is not the same thing. PENDING CONTENT. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pictures.

Scaling in complex systems

Dave Snowden

Naturally I have done a lot more thinking since then but the fundamentals remain: you don’t scale a complex system by aggregation or imitation but be decomposition to an optimal level of granularity followed by recombination (possible exadaptive recombination). Complexity is about how things connect far more than what the things are. It was rejected on the basis that scale was perceived in terms of size and number of reports.

Understanding complexity

Harold Jarche

Thinking of complex adaptive systems as merely complicated entities that can be regulated like machines can lead to disaster, as Niall Ferguson shows in his recent book. Human systems are complex. Today’s large, complicated organizations are now facing complex business environments that require agility in simultaneously learning and working. A schematic history of human civilization reflects a growing complexity of the collective behavior of human organizations.

Agency: privilege & complexity

Dave Snowden

In part that is the question of privilege, in part a failure to really on board the implications of complexity (and I speak here as some who has sinned and may well still be in a state of sin in this regard). In today’s post I want to start the examination of who/what should and who/what can have agency in creating change in the complex fractal systems which comprise our various organisations, polities and increasing poleis that comprise our world.

Decision Making in Our Increasingly Complex Organizations

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

As machine predictions become inexpensive and commonplace, the human judgement that leverages and complements prediction will become more valuable, especially given the increasing complexity of the decisions our institutions are called upon to make. “It’s But, explains McKinsey, our growing organizational complexity has clouded decision making accountability. Complex Systems Economic Issues Management and Leadership Society and Culture Technology and Strategy

Coherence in complexity

Harold Jarche

Anecdote reports that John Kotter, leadership guru , is accepting that methods like his 8-step process for leading change may not be effective in the face of complexity. In my last post I wrote that in an increasingly complex workplace, many of the old models are no longer useful, referring more specifically to workplace learning. Complexity, driven by global networked communications, is the main factor. complexity InternetTime SocialBusiness

No cookie cutters for complexity

Harold Jarche

Five years later, Dave Snowden makes a similar observation, sparked by a KPMG marketing brochure on “cutting through complexity” Dave concludes: If a consultancy firm really wants to help their clients they they should support them in living with complexity, riding its potential, avoiding reductionist approaches, engaging customer and staff in a sensing network. Complex problems require require different thinking. Who stands to gain from the report?

[review] Cheap Complex Devices

David Weinberger

So, with the knowingly-false intention of coming back to write a longer review, here’s a brief report on one book on my list. John Sundman (Disclosure: John is a friend from a mailing list) is a geek, and Cheap Complex Devices is a geeky novel. John details the mechanics and economics of flogging self-published books in his report on DefCon I’ve got an ever-growing list of books that I intend to write reviews of because they’re so damn interesting.

Workshop report

Dave Snowden

I was also charged to give people some experience of complex facilitation techniques, so I explained what I was doing as I went along. Each group then identified two complex and two complicated issues, broke into four (Complexity A & B, Complicated A & B) and the groups were recombined. An all day workshop today as a build in to the ARK KM conference here. A good turn out, many people I know well plus some new people.

Build trust, embrace networks, manage complexity

Harold Jarche

We have known for quite a while that hierarchies are ineffective when things get complex. In matrix management people have more than one reporting line and often work across business units. Most organizations still deal with complexity through reorganization. A connected enterprise starts by building a foundation of trust, embracing networks, and then managing complexity. In a complex world, team unity may be efficient, but not very effective. Complexity.

Scale and Complex Systemic Innovation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Conventional wisdom these days says that small is better when it comes to innovation and putting new ideas into practice,” writes Mandel at the beginning of the report. It favors large companies because of their ability to address complex systemic problems, manage the large-scale ecosystems that solving such problems requires, and bring their solutions to market all round the world. But, it is not enough to be large for a company to succeed at complex systemic innovation.

Exception handling is complex work

Harold Jarche

Complex, new problems need tacit knowledge to solve them. For example, just adding finished reports to a knowledge base does not help others understand how that report was developed. Exception handling is complex work, which requires passion, creativity and initiative. Today’s complex work is tomorrow’s merely complicated or even simple work. In complex situations there is no time to write a detailed assessment. complexity Wirearchy

The Complex Nature of Cloud-based Innovation

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

A somewhat similar point was made in a 2013 report by the McKinsey Global Institute , Ten IT-enabled business trends for the decade ahead , which listed cloud as one of its top trends and succinctly described its key value as realizing anything as a service. In 2009, the Royal Society , - the UK’s national academy of science, - released a report: Hidden Wealth: the contribution of science to service sector innovation.

A client report

Dave Snowden

This is a growing area of work for us with a lot of organisations frustrated by complex reports with lots of figures but no context. One of the things I like about this report is the mix of inductive and abductive results. One of the things about narrative work using SenseMaker® is that you are often dealing with material, especially the results which cannot be shared.

Patti Anklam , in discussing value networks and complexity states: Understanding of complexity provides a practical guide to managing context.

Bread, Freedom, Social Justice: A report from Egypt

David Weinberger

The cry of the masses reflected a street awareness of the complexity of development as human dignity and active citizenry — an enlightenment that the ruling elite lacked. A mix of political naivite and the desire to protect own interests (they are a major recipient of US aid and a major economic player), SCAF’s amateur performance has brought to disarray the politics and economics of a very complex country. 7 principles of intervention in complex systems

Dave Snowden

Not to simply report what we had found, but to allow to explore the data and come up with a series of interventions that would hold out the possibility of achieving change, or through failure would allow learning to take place. Now one of the basic Cynefin mantras is that of safe-fail interventions, and lots of them, if the problem is complex. It is important to realise that a lot of conflict happens in the complex arena. I may buy this T-Shirt as its a great slogan.

Social Learning, Complexity and the Enterprise

Harold Jarche

Our relationship with knowledge is changing as our work becomes more intangible and complex. PDL – Personal Directed Learning: from Clockwork & Predictable to Complexity & Surprising. Complexity, or maybe our appreciation of it, has rendered the world unpredictable, so the orientation of learning is shifting from past (efficiency, best practice) to future (creative response, innovation). In complex environments it no longer works to sit back and see what will happen.

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

In addition, by reaching out to financial institutions, merchants, application developers and others, Apple is helping bring together the different players in the payments ecosystem, something that’s absolutely essential to succeed in such a complex undertaking. The report notes that while 50 percent of adults around the world have accounts at a financial institution, more than 2.5 The report includes a number of findings and recommendations which are summarized below.

Growing Up in a Complex World

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The primary challenge emerging out of the CEO conversations was complexity - the fact that CEOs now operate in a world that is substantially more volatile, uncertain and complex. Inheriting a Complex World: Future Leaders Envision Sharing the Planet invited graduate and undergraduate students to participate in a Web-based survey between October 2009 and January 2010. They grew up in a complex world. Several weeks ago IBM released its 2010 Global CEO Study.

How Can We Ensure that Our Complex AI Systems Do What We Want Them to Do?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Things are even tougher with people-centric sociotechnical systems, which not only have to deal with potential software problems, but with the even more complex issues involved in human behaviors and interactions. And, at the bleeding-edges of complexity are data-driven AI systems , which are generally based on statistical analysis and machine learning methods. . What is it that makes these systems so intrinsically complex? What purpose does this complexity serve?

The Complex Transition to the Age of the Cloud

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The IT function of 2015 will bear little resemblance to its current state,” concludes one such report. Cloud computing is a highly complex initiative - at the technical, business and organizational levels. And, one of the key lessons we all hopefully learned from the dot-com era is that complex, global initiatives take time. In June of 2008 I participated in a conference on cloud computing.

Drug addiction: The complex truth

Mind Hacks

You can read more about Rat Park in the original scientific report. We’re told studies have proven that drugs like heroin and cocaine instantly hook a user. First, having worked on custom LMS, LCMS, Authoring projects and being pretty deeply familiar with SCORM, it's easy to blame the LMS for poor reporting on per-question reporting, but its very hard for an LMS to create generic reports that work well across all the variations that you run into. So, if the source of the statement "I'm not happy with their support for SCORM" is only the issues of reporting, that's a bit unfair.

How complex is our work?

Harold Jarche

On my recent post, Emergent practices need practice , I looked at how complexity could not be easily addressed through traditional training methods: But many of the problems we face today are COMPLEX, and methods to solve simple and complicated problems will not work with complex ones. However, there are no clear objectives with complex problems. Does anyone have experience or data in looking at how our work is divided from simple to complex problems?

Audit firms see new revenue streams in intangibles reporting. Financial executives must learn new reporting techniques. Until recently the uptake of intangibles reporting has been slow, but the pace is picking up. Over the last years the production of sustainability reports has been added to the to-do list for many overburdened corporate staff. As Stewart points out, intangibles accounting and sustainability reporting are “two sides of the same coin”.
