Complex facilitation

Dave Snowden

My priority today was to get a body of material from various documents and slide sets into the entry for Complex Facilitation. Now some people get complex facilitation but a lot don’t. I always have mixed feelings when I finish a Christmas blog series.

Designing Learning is a Probabilistic Exercise

Clark Quinn

At the Guild’s recent mLearnCon, I was having a conversation in which I was reminded that designing performance interventions is a probabilistic exercise, and it occurred to me that we’re often not up front enough about it. We are much more complex, and consequently variable.

New Leadership Model: An Exercise in Bifurcation

Dan Pontefract

Perhaps it was overly complex. My thinking, learning, and writing tends to fall into the theoretical camps that propose how technology, leadership and learning can (or should) converge to improve the health, productivity and culture of an organization. Isolating any of them does none of us any good. Recently, however, I’ve been spending more time thinking about the traits of an individual leader – specifically in the context of technology, leadership and learning.

Blogging as an Exercise of the Brain

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Yes, there is one other such activity in my life - physical exercise. I started exercising regularly while living in Manhattan around 1980. I then discovered that jogging on a treadmill did not bother my knees, so I was able to continue exercising. In addition, I have included weight training in my exercise regime. So, for almost thirty years now, I have been been exercising five days a week on average. Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy.

Another sign that complexity thinking is coming into its own. There are new action forms for this, and also a whole new approach to portfolio management of complex interventions. The workshop is constructed based on insights from cognitive science (in particular breaking pattern entrainment and ritual dissent) and complexity science (sometimes know as the science of uncertainty). A basic introduction to complexity theory using metaphor in the main.

Leadership for Complexity

Clark Quinn

The other meme from the retreat event last weekend was the notion of leadership for complexity. We talked through how things are moving from complicated to complex (and how important it is to recognize the difference), and that organizations need to receive the wake-up call and start moving forward. What’s needed is leadership that can lead the organization to be able to leverage complexity for success.

The Complex Transition to the Age of the Cloud

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Many companies have not exercised the needed discipline in their IT operations. Cloud computing is a highly complex initiative - at the technical, business and organizational levels. And, one of the key lessons we all hopefully learned from the dot-com era is that complex, global initiatives take time. The Napoleon Complex

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

We live in a complex world where a wide range of factors go into producing results. But more to the point, when we ask, “what is killing those people,” a more complex answer emerges. These are medical conditions but they have to a large degree social causes - things like diet and nutrition, exercise, smoking and pollution, stress and deprivation. I just want to capture my part of a discussion that took place on Matthew Tabor's website.

Corporate Survival: Lessons from Biology

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Some business thinkers have argued that companies are like biological species and have tried to extract business lessons from biology, with uneven success,” note the authors. “We stress that companies are identical to biological species in an important respect: Both are what’s known as complex adaptive systems. Let’s take a closer look at the nature of complex adaptive systems. Why are these systems so complex?

The social imperative

Harold Jarche

” The natural world is composed of complex systems and it makes sense that the best strategies for any population are ones that take complexity into account. They cannot address large-scale levels of complexity, as explained in Complexity Rising , a 1997 paper on complexity profiles. In summary, the complexity of the collective behavior must be smaller than the complexity of the controlling individual. Communities complexity SocialBusiness

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Complex systems, whether natural or engineered, are composed of many parts. But it ’ s not the mere number of component that makes them complex. After all, stones are composed of huge numbers of molecules, yet we would not consider them complex. A truly complex system consists of many different kinds of parts, intricate organizations and highly different structures at different levels of scale. What makes these systems so complex?
