New Leadership Model: An Exercise in Bifurcation

Dan Pontefract

Perhaps it was overly complex. My thinking, learning, and writing tends to fall into the theoretical camps that propose how technology, leadership and learning can (or should) converge to improve the health, productivity and culture of an organization.

Another sign that complexity thinking is coming into its own. There are new action forms for this, and also a whole new approach to portfolio management of complex interventions. A basic introduction to complexity theory using metaphor in the main.

Blogging as an Exercise of the Brain

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Yes, there is one other such activity in my life - physical exercise. I started exercising regularly while living in Manhattan around 1980. I then discovered that jogging on a treadmill did not bother my knees, so I was able to continue exercising. In addition, I have included weight training in my exercise regime. So, for almost thirty years now, I have been been exercising five days a week on average. Regular exercise is a critical part of staying healthy.

Designing Learning is a Probabilistic Exercise

Clark Quinn

At the Guild’s recent mLearnCon, I was having a conversation in which I was reminded that designing performance interventions is a probabilistic exercise, and it occurred to me that we’re often not up front enough about it. We are much more complex, and consequently variable.

Cognitive Edge announces training courses for 2016 – Working with Complex Problems

Today we’re announcing practitioner-focused courses on complexity and the Cynefin framework. Course 1: Dealing with Complex Problems. The course equips you with tools to build healthier, more effective working environments through pragmatic methods and exercises.

Leadership for Complexity

Clark Quinn

The other meme from the retreat event last weekend was the notion of leadership for complexity. We talked through how things are moving from complicated to complex (and how important it is to recognize the difference), and that organizations need to receive the wake-up call and start moving forward. What’s needed is leadership that can lead the organization to be able to leverage complexity for success.

The Complex Transition to the Age of the Cloud

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Many companies have not exercised the needed discipline in their IT operations. Cloud computing is a highly complex initiative - at the technical, business and organizational levels. And, one of the key lessons we all hopefully learned from the dot-com era is that complex, global initiatives take time. The Napoleon Complex

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

We live in a complex world where a wide range of factors go into producing results. But more to the point, when we ask, “what is killing those people,” a more complex answer emerges. These are medical conditions but they have to a large degree social causes - things like diet and nutrition, exercise, smoking and pollution, stress and deprivation. I just want to capture my part of a discussion that took place on Matthew Tabor's website.

Irving Wladawsky-Berger: The Complex Chemistry between Brands and Customers - Some Personal Experiences

Corporate Survival: Lessons from Biology

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Let’s take a closer look at the nature of complex adaptive systems. Why are these systems so complex? I found the most satisfying answer to this seemingly Socratic question in an excellent 2002 paper - Complexity and Robustness - by professors Jean Carlson and John Doyle.

The social imperative

Harold Jarche

” The natural world is composed of complex systems and it makes sense that the best strategies for any population are ones that take complexity into account. In summary, the complexity of the collective behavior must be smaller than the complexity of the controlling individual.

What’s the Core Priority of Corporate Managers?

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The theory is out of step with ordinary usage: Shareholders are not owners of the corporation in any traditional sense of the term, nor do they have owners’ traditional incentives to exercise care in managing it.

A central authority, be it a corporation or government agency, exercises editorial, financial, and (sometimes) political control over the content that reaches the consumer.

The Analog Foundations of the Digital Revolution

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Lack of identity is an impediment for poor people to exercise their basic democratic and human rights. Government control: Without the proper accountability, governments can leverage digital technologies to exercise greater control over their citizens, rather than to empower them.

What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us Stronger

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Complex systems, whether natural or engineered, are composed of many parts. But it ’ s not the mere number of component that makes them complex. After all, stones are composed of huge numbers of molecules, yet we would not consider them complex.

What to do?

Euen Semple

There are probably two main themes to the conversations I have with people in organisations - how to deal with complexity, and what to do about staff who are increasingly disengaged. As work life becomes faster changing, less stable, more unpredictable, many managers attempt to exercise greater control. They too can see the increased complexity and unpredictability but they are left feeling that they have less agency, even less control over their own destinies than they had before.

Small moves, smartly made

John Hagel

Of course, we can get consumed by that exercise as well. Again, that’s not easy, but a key approach is to focus on identifying “influence points” – those locations that exist in all complex adaptive systems that have a disproportionate impact on the evolution of the broader system. Small moves, smartly made, can set big things in motion – that’s the sub-title of my last book, The Power of Pull. It’s been a key theme of my work for decades, but it’s coming back to bite me.

Rethinking Personal Data

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

This a complex, emotionally charged debate. . The actors involved, therefore, have valid rights and responsibilities to the data and may require different permissions to exercise those rights. In addition, the report recommends the establishment of living labs where the various stakeholders can collaborate and learn together how to best develop and test comprehensive solutions to these highly complex and important problem. .

Its members do not just represent the centers of official power - though they are certainly part of it - but rather the whole matrix of official and social relations within which power is exercised. They believed that derivatives and other financial instruments were enough to distribute risks, thus lessening the need for regulating the increasingly complex financial markets. Complex societies and economies do not function efficiently without mutual trust and confidence.

Lessons from the Rescue of the Chilean Miners

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

The rescue went so remarkably well that it is easy to forget how incredibly complex this undertaking was. What can we learn from the successful rescue effort as a case study in how to organize and manage such complex projects? What does that tell us about the kind of innovations needed to successfully navigate our way through a highly complex, unanticipated crisis? The rescue project can be also studied as an exercise in collaborative innovation at multiple levels.

Innovation on the cusp: symbiosis

Dave Snowden

By using that synthesis to set the context its easier to understand complexity and Cynefin, in particular the fact that order and stability are legitimate in context (one of the main differentiators of Cynefin from other complexity frameworks, models and approaches).

The US Constitution: A Pantheon of (Sometimes Conflicting) Values

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

A claim is made in court that the government is entitled to exercise a power, or an individual is entitled to claim the benefit of a right, that is set out in the terms of some particular provision of the Constitution. On this view, deciding constitutional cases should be a straightforward exercise of reading fairly and viewing facts objectively.”. But those are not the complex systems problems that baffle us.

Dave Snowden

Since then I have been working the ideas into a series of keynote speeches and more recently workshop exercises. One of the reasons this is important is that we can manage constraints and a large part of doing something within a complex systems is understanding what you can manage and how.

The myopia of metrics

Dave Snowden

Now this is not a new topic, anyone with the most basic understanding of complexity will know the issues with measurement. To be clear there is nothing wrong with measurement per se, but there are massive problems when the measure becomes the main point from which judgement is exercised.

Reflections from Another Part of the World and a Different Side of My Brain

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

It is well accepted that a good physical exercise plan should include different kinds of workouts, some focused on aerobics to increase cardiovascular endurance, and some anaerobic in nature to strengthen our muscles. In addition to its benefits on our physical health, a regime of exercise also improves our mental health as well as helping to reduce depression. But, advances in brain sciences have begun to show the importance of also exercising our mental faculties.
