Yesterday, during my presentation on personal knowledge management to IBM BlueIQ I was asked about the role of blogging in my own sense-making processes. These are my half-baked thoughts which I make public in order to share and to learn. In my Seek>Sense><Share model, seeking and annotating information is important but cannot stand on its own. Seeking information is an important foundation to PKM online but it’s of little use without action.

The term personal knowledge management (PKM) isn’t about management in a business sense but rather how we can manage to make sense of information and experience in our electronic surround. Personal – according to one’s abilities, interests & motivation (not directed by external forces). Knowledge – connecting information to experience (know what, know who, know how). Management – getting things done.

Effective knowledge sharing is what many organizations do not do well, or as Lew Platt past-CEO of Hewlett-Packard said, “if only HP knew what HP knows, we would be three times more productive&#. That’s the key benefit of personal knowledge management, in my opinion. If each person can better manage knowledge creation and capture, then it becomes easier to share it. tools is that they are designed for knowledge-sharing as well.
