A New Website, Part Six - Drupal Modules

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

You have to select 'Site Configuration', then 'Site Information', and change the page at the bottom of the list of options (though you should actually create the new page first). Modules A module is some additional programming that gives your site some additional functionality. A number of optional modules come installed with the original Drupal download. In addition, you can get many more modules from the Drupal web site. So I activate the module.

Not just exposure to tough economic times and having to make changes to do more with less, and do things differently. Each of the above were overtaken by circumstances (and technologies) that changed faster and to a greater extent than they thought possible, understood, and planned for.

Serverless Computing - An Innovative Approach to Software Development

Irving Wladawsky-Berger

Serverless is an approach to software development for quickly building and deploying applications as a collection of loosely coupled modules and microservices. Cloud is now an integral part of a company’s IT strategy, grounded in the day-to-day nuts and bolts of implementing change.

Designing E-Learning 3.0 in gRSShopper - 1

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

I did a bit of searching around and determined that the overall structure is pretty common: - course - modules - an array of individual units of instruction - sections - an array of individual offerings of the course Like this: Figure 1. Let's define what I want in a module.

In the previous segment I decided to create a course with modules and sections, and set up the modules. I'll fill out the actual content of those modules over time. What I want to do is list the course modules and events (there's only one course so I don't need to list courses).

Rethink what’s gone before and adapt to change, or keep on doing what’s always been done in the hope beyond hope that it will work. The first of these choices has the potential to place L&D departments at the heart of the changes that are driving successful organisations.

Content as a Service

Delivery of learning via the LMS is still, and will continue to be, appropriate for some learning environments, but it is not the whole of learning, and is increasingly out of step with the changing tastes and preferences driven by a workforce armed with mobile devices and versant in social media. Mistakes in the content may be forever because the effort to make changes isn’t worth the hassle. This includes your eLearning modules, PDFs, movies, podcasts, articles, etc.

Drupal Documentation

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Responding to this item in KairosNews wherein it is argued, regarding documentation problems, that users should "revise the existing documentation or provide new text as needed and negotiate with the project to have your changes included." The problem is (a) that the Drupal website is very badly organized, and (b) searches for Drupal help are generally futile, and (c) help that is located is often obsolete or wrong In other words, the solution is out of our hands.

A New Website, Part Eleven - Content Construction

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

It is worth noting that the node counter in Drupal does not increment authomatically, which means that after a bunch of records are inserted you have to change the counter manually. First of all, how do define events: I needed to decide between the ' Calendar ' module and the 'CCK' module. How about the Calendar module? First I had to find it - once again, Drupal's awful search made what should have been a one-minute job a ten minute exercise in frustration.

Blossoms aims to develop a large free repository of video modules created by gifted volunteers from around the world to assist school teachers with math and science courses. Each module builds on prerequisite material that the class has already learned. Post-training tests demonstrate short-term memory recall, not behaviour-changing learning. Learning is about behaviour change, not short-term knowledge acquisition. These core concepts only change rarely. In many situations, task-specific content changes constantly.

A New Website, Part Nine - Mailing List Follies

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Views Over the weekend I installed the Views module and experimented with it. Happily this module does exactly what I want it to do: it allows me to describe a list of records I would like displayed on a page or a block, and it then displays them for me. Using the CCK module, I have determined that I can create new data types that emulate the tables in my old system, including even the links between records that I use. I eventually found the module here.

But they brought withthem some radical changes to the idea of learning itself. This changed the natureof a computer program from a single entity that processed data to a collectionof independent entities - objects - that interacted with each other: they couldsend messages to each other to prompt responses, one could be 'contained' inanother, or one could be 'part' of another. Second, it created the idea that these content modules orchunks were sharable.
