The game of course

My thoughts are related: Tool vendors should ensure that their tools can support designers interested in these elements. In particular, in addition to presentation of multimedia content, there needs to be: a) the ability to provide separate feedback for different choices, b) the ability to have scenario interactions whereby learners can take multistep decision paths mimicking real experiences, and c) the ability to get the necessary evaluation feedback. design strategy

Carrying forward

Clark Quinn

During my presentation in Minneapolis on future-looking applications of technology to learning, the usual and completely understandable question came up about how to change an organization to buy-in to this new way of acting in the world: to start focusing on performance outcomes and not courses. I suggested making small changes in what was being done now: push back a bit on the immediate request for a course, and start really diving into the real performance problem.

Myths some teachers (apparently) believe

Clark Quinn

This teacher is presenting the concepts in class, and then assign practice at home. My suspicion, of course, is that this is to have pretty room when parents visit, but if so, I think the teacher bloody well ought to buy decorations, and not keep my child from enjoying the weekend to make the teacher’s room pretty. design meta-learning

Reflections on ISPI 2010

Clark Quinn

Early in the year, I gave a presentation online to the Massachusetts chapter of ISPI (the international society for performance improvement), and they rewarded me with a membership. Given that I just won a copy of GPS software for my iPhone (after seemingly never winning anything), I reckon I should buy a lottery ticket! While there may need to be management buy-in, it comes from emergent value, not exec-dictated outcomes the group should achieve!

Next week, I’ll be presenting on myths at ATD’s International Conference (Tues, 1PM). The ‘Least Assistance’ Principle

Clark Quinn

He was disagreeing with “buying rapid development tools to bash out ill formed ‘e-learning’ to an audience that will not only be unimpressed but also none the wiser - or more productive&# , a point I want to nuance. I agree with not using rapid elearning to create courses for novices, but there is a role for bashing out courses for another audience, the practitioner. Tags: design
