The game of course

Jay Cross

The largest obstacle holding L&D professionals back from taking advantage of network technologies, distributed networks, social connections, peer interaction, and informal learning may be their bedrock belief that learning = courses. What’s a course? Design Meta-Learning

Adaptive Path

The 3 Qs for Great Experience Design. Using these three variables, we’ve created corresponding questions to help us quickly rate a team’s experience design prowess. Notice that the story doesn’t describe the specifics of the design or the system — that’s not important. In our research, the average team member works on an experience design project for twenty-four months. Jared Spool.

Labels for what we do

While it’s true for our field as a whole, it’s also true for the specific job of those who design formal learning. He goes through the usual candidates of labels for what we do – instructional designer, learning designer, learner experience designer – and finds flaws.

stevenberlinjohnson.com: Universal Remotes Are Universally Useless

Steven Berlin Johnson

So I buy this fancy Marantz receiver that comes with its own universal remote that theoretically should allow us to consolidate the five remotes we currently have (for the LCD screen, the DVD player, the cable box, etc) into one single remote. To do this, however, you have to sit there pointing the cable box remote at the Marantz remote so it can learn the commands one by one, which of course is time-consuming and annoying.

The Enterprise 2.0 Recovery Plan

Andy McAfee

Recovery Plan by Andrew McAfee on December 1, 2008 Recent events in the news have inspired a thought experiment: I asked myself what I would do if I were put in charge of IT as part of the turnaround effort at a big US automaker. I’d set about trying to learn answers to these questions, of course, but this would be a long, slow process. Of course if leadership used enterprise 2.0 Will I let my part-time design contractors Yammer away with my finance wizards?

Navigation by fell runner …

Dave Snowden

To give you an idea of the period; we’d had to make a special trip to Cardiff to buy me boots (the ubiquitous presence of the outdoor shop was a decade or more away). I also remember those events for the Buttermere valley however.

Storytelling & narrative

Dave Snowden

I also need to buy Bob Dick a beer or two for his patience with my tardy behaviour in getting this written. These deal with full stories, often designed (well mostly designed) for performance, often told and retold to many audiences. Of course nothing is fully covered by any of those hence the triad. It is therefore a reflection or post-hoc rationalisation or explanation of an event in the light of the needs of the present.

Scaling: merge, match & masticate

Dave Snowden

Cognitive Edge has been working with the UNDP on how do you scale success in the development sector and we recently ran a fascinating event in New York look at the science of how complex adaptive systems scale which is now moving into early experimental use. It still assumes a defined need at a level of granularity that will gain sufficient buy in to get resource allocation and with enough evidence of possible use to support that (reference here to the complex domain model ).

Change for Cognitive Edge

Dave Snowden

The new courses are on the web site (see references below) and some are coming up very soon! I will hand over these courses to other experienced practitioners in the network, which allow us to increase the volume of courses to meet demand. We are creating a series of advanced seminars, designed for those who want a more conceptual approach, or as a follow up programme for people after they have done the core accreditation.

A case for the LMS?

Clark Quinn

Harold put up a post that the “ LMS is no longer the centre of the universe “, while Jane asked “ what is the future of the LMS “ Both of them are recognizing the point I make about the scope of learning in thinking about performance: it’s more than just courses, it’s the whole ecosystem. Providing access to courses is a good thing, as there are situations where formal learning is the appropriate approach. That’s a course-centric model.
