Signifying change

There is now quite a bit available about signifying change with ritual. In the former, they may be becoming a member of the community, but it’s about changing personal behavior regardless. And, to be clear, here I’m talking secular change.).

Buy Smart!

Clark Quinn

Someone is buying that fish! So, rather than try to change the system, my simple answer is to educate folks (hence my passion for learning). Where my thinking led me was to a ‘buy smart’ campaign. Don’t ask how my thoughts got here, but I was reflecting on the fact that the western economy is largely predicated on a free market (whether we truly achieve that is a different rant).

Real change

Euen Semple

So much organisational change fails because either it is a token gesture at an organisational level, or people don't buy into the change individually. I am convinced that all change emanates from the individual. Structural and procedural changes can help but unless people change nothing changes. There is an intimacy about real personal change that most in corporate life back away from, or sanitise with process.

What happens when Google buys Sprint too?

Doc Searls

The limiting factor to change has not been the technology but obsolete business models and the lack of competition. For example, what if Google buys, builds or rents fat pipes out to Sprint cell sites, and either buys or builds its way into the content delivery network (CDN) business, competing with while also supplying Akamai, Limelight and Level3? @ChunkaMui just put up a great post in Forbes: Motorola + Sprint = Google’s AT&T, Verizon and Comcast Killer.

Changing Culture: Scaling Up Excellence

Clark Quinn

I’ve found myself picking up books about how to change culture, as it seems to be the big barrier to a successful revolution. I’ve finished a quick read of Scaling Up Excellence , am in the midst of Change the Culture, Change the Game , and have Reinventing Organizations and Organize for Complexity (the latter two recommended by my colleague Harold Jarche ) on deck. Leaders have to go in, figure out what needs to change, and then lead that change.

General or specific change

Clark Quinn

I was reflecting on the two books I recently wrote about, Scaling Up and Changing the Game , versus the cultural approach of the Learning Organization I wrote about years ago (and refer to regularly). The thing is that both of the new books are about choosing either a very specific needed change, whether determined by fiat or based upon something already working well, whereas the earlier work identified general characteristics that make sense.

How collaboration is transforming the relationship between sell-side and buy-side financial markets

Ross Dawson

I have spent considerable time working with the institutional financial services sector, and seen major changes over the years. One of the most obvious examples is in the relationship between buy-side and sell-side in financial markets. The availability of information and the concentration of analytic capabilities in the buy-side has shifted the balance of power, and made the value proposition of financial market sales activities ever more tenuous.
