Once You’re Lucky describes the re-incarnation of the web in Silicon Valley through the inside stories of the entrepreneurs behind PayPal, LinkedIn, Digg, Six Apart, Facebook, Yelp, Twitter, and others. Today’s successes are social networks built for one’s friends that just happened to prove viable as companies. This new web is about connecting with people and sharing things with them, things like video, news clips, restaurant reviews, photos, blogs.

Humannet at Cisco

Yesterday I spent the day at Cisco talking with old friends and new about what Fast Company recently described as an “unprecedented forward-looking strategy to unleash what it’s calling a ‘ human network effect ’ both on and off the Cisco campus.” That said, many companies would not be successful taking Cisco’s leaderless, social approach. Social media: terrible name for “let’s get together.” Activity Streams are going to be wildly important for social learning.

There were about 7 examples mentioned including Intuit using a Wiki-like system for customers to ask questions/get advice around taxes, using a group blog with students prior to a formal learning event, the US Army's use of collaboration tools to share best practices in Iraq, and several others.
