[liveblog] International Conf. of Univ. Libs: Morning talks

David Weinberger

I’m at The 13th annual International Conference of University Libraries (Conferencia Internacional sobre Bibliotecas Universitarias) at the Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. Her topic: “Reinventing the Library: Technology as a Catalyst.” Mariel’s group is building online scheduling of meeting with libraries. Rural students need to learn how to use the Web to search the university library. Look at user needs to design services.

LMS vs. LCMS

Instructional Designers (IDs) are now under more pressure than ever to deliver the best content, and a tool that many IDs are familiar with is a Learning Management System (LMS). In the simplest terms, this is a software package that manages course delivery and administration.

He’s giving a talk to Harvard’s librarians about his perspective on how libraries might change, a topic he says puts him out on a limb. Title of his talk: “Deriving the library from first principles.&# Foot traffic to libraries is going down. Library budgets are being squeezed. “Public libraries are definitely feeling the pinch&# exactly when people have less discretionary money and thus are spending more time at libraries.

Content as a Service

Xyleme

As instructional designers, we create our learning products, package them up with all the content and media, wish them well, and ship them off to the LMS’s – never to be seen again. Learners must go through a cumbersome process of logging in, registering for the course, launching the course, then navigating through it to find the bit they are interested in. It takes months to create big monolithic eLearning courses that we lose control of once we ship to an LMS.

The Harvard Library Lab , which issues grants for library innovation at the University, is holding a forum in which all the projects get 5 mins to introduce themselves. It’s intended for classroom use, or, of course, for anyone. This is a viewer designed specifically for viewing historical atlases online. They’re working on ways to spatially search information in the Harvard Library system. and the Watson Library at the Met).

online library - cooperation & entertainment - comouter conference, social netwirks, iTines - external web 2.0 A: I tend to favour one platform, because of support costs, but prefer a flexible and customizable approach - one platform for all is just good business sense Q: suggestion to use MOOCs not to teach a course, but to teach the skills hey need - but how do we make sure students use them?

They are however designed to be standalone talks as well so hopefully you will not be as unfulfilled after the talk as you might be afraid of being. She challenges the concept of the Massive Open Online Course by asking, "What is the problem that MOOCs appear to have solved?"

The ‘learning’ referred to here is what we know as formal structured learning activities - classes, courses, programmes, and eLearning. Prior to system roll-out you’re required to attend a 2-hour instructor-led briefing/course along with all your colleagues. The course is content-rich.

Presentation to UNCTAD's Advisory Group on "Developing skills, knowledge and capacities through innovation: E-Learning, M-Learning, cloud-Learning"

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

We''ve discovered in recent offerings of online courses, people started out enthusiastically, but are unable to finish the course because they''ve run out of time. This is something that does not come from the online course, or even the online environment. Learning looks at the online course, as a course. What I mean by that is the traditional college/university course. learning in many respects begins as a set of course tools for web support.

Critical Thinking and Knowledge Domains

And from an English department's website: "Through courses in literature and in writing, our majors hone their ability to read critically, reason analytically, and write clearly."? If there are online versions, I'll review the articles you cite; otherwise, I'm hundreds of kilometres from any library that might have them.? That seems other example of value of design pedagogy.

My Viva

My contribution, if we must identify one, is that I see it differently from everyone else (of course, everyone sees it differently from everyone else). At Assiniboine I created a website and online courses and eventually a learning management system.

Of course, he is right. There are different ways of describing this turn; I'll pick one that works for us, though of course we could talk about it in a lot more detail if you wanted. There is a third option, of course, and it is the option that only the mental is real.

The past half-century of empirical research on this issue has provided overwhelming and unambiguous evidence that minimal guidance during instruction is significantly less effective and efficient than guidance specifically designed to support the cognitive processing necessary for learning. Recent developments in instructional research and instructional design models that support guidance during instruction are briefly described.
