Ethical Codes and Learning Analytics

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

Abstract The growth and development of learning analytics has placed a range of new capacities into the hands of educational institutions. The ethics of learning analytics will therefore need to be developed on criteria specific to education. It may be argued that the relation between ethics and law is such that in a treatment of the ethics of learning analytics we ought also to be concerned with the law in relation to learning analytics.

I had to do a quick double take on this article (first, to determine if it was April 1, anywhere in the world): Evolution Unbound: Blackboard embraces open source. I’m not surprised that Blackboard is interested in openness. At the EDUCAUSE conference in October, they were clear that they wanted to partner with the open educational resources movement. At that point, Pearson had announced open class (look Ma, free LMS!). How do you respond to Open Class?

classes from all over the world - but do they develop the kind of courses specifically targeted to these workers - MOOCs can play a part - the open market concept which aims to break the monopoly on education - broadcast of learning not enough, we need local support - mentors, facilitators, even teachers - eg. is the authorship open or closed - do you want hosted or unhosted etc Maureen McClure - Uni Pittsburgh - who owns development?

I also needed to prove that the web could be used for online learning, so I took a guide I had created for my Grande Prairie students, Stephen's Guide to the Logical Fallacies , and published it on my website, openly licensed, free for all to use (the license was based on similar open licensing I had seen in the MUD community). But it was brilliantly engineered; I learned tons by digging through the source, learning how all the Javascript worked, and adapting it for my own purposes.

Beyond Free ? Open Learning in a Networked World

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

I want to talk to you about the concept of free, the concept of open learning, the concept of networked learning in a networked world and the concept of the institution. You may in certain sense think of this talk, together with the other talks, as a rebuttal to the way institutions are approaching Massive Open Online Courses and open learning generally today. Even the defenders of open content say, "Oh, you''re way over. or you can buy the season for $29.99

Sustainability and MOOCs in Historical Perspective

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

We're going to talk about the factors that led to the development of the Massive Open Online Course and Connectivism and the new phenomena in learning today. But, a few preliminaries before I start the talk, because it's all about open education. :) This presentation is available now at that website. One model where the company, and Blackboard began this way, would post all of the technology on their site, and you would buy the service from them. Openness.

Beyond Assessment ? Recognizing Achievement in a Networked World

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

This talk is basically what he said, except he said it in the French way with complex theories, while I''m going to give it in the prickly, analytical, English kind of Canadian, dry presentation. I did a talk just downstairs on open content. This addresses the specific question of assessment in open learning and in informal learning. Is open online learning or the MOOC, the massive open online course, or informal learning in general doing the sort of thing that we need?

Beyond Institutions Personal Learning in a Networked World

Stephen Downes: Half an Hour

As Peter said this is part 2 of a trilogy of talks, I gave the first one yesterday at University of Greenwich on the topic of "Open learning and open educational resources". What they are talking about these days is the destruction of the university at the hands of the massive open online course. As one of the people who invented the massive open online course, I feel a little personally involved here. We''re told there will be analytics and data-driven management.
